Fault with L.V. Ties

• Apr 30, 2025 - 21:35

Playback continues through a subsequent note on the same string.
So in this example the sound of the open string and fret 1 are both heard from beat 3 of the measure onwards, resulting in an unpleasant dischordant effect.

Can Laissez Vibrer ties (l.v. ties) tailor "ring" to sound like well interpreted guitar finger-picking?

To evoke realistic guitar sustain some notes must ring beyond their face value duration, as they do when affected by a Let Ring (Laissez Vibrer) object. Within MuseScore Studio a guitar note with an l.v. tie will ring for at least three measures (in 4/4 at the default 120 BMP tempo) and likely until its sample or envelop stops. And that's a lot of ring.

Convincing guitar playback also requires intricate ring limiting: the option to stop ring on certain strings, as when a guitarist lifts a left hand finger, or plays a new note on an already ringing string, or mutes a string with the right hand.

I'm unaware of a mechanism that halts the ring of an l.v. tie. (At first I turned to Properties>Laissez Vibrer>minimum length but then discovered that it's not a playback property, but rather it's an engraving property that simply lengthens an l.v. tie in the score.)

Does the effect of an l.v. tie export to MIDI?

I checked and found the effect of an l.v. tie (a Laissez Vibrer tie) is not conveyed via MIDI export. When I import the MIDI file to Logic Pro x I find no CC64 sustain pedal messages corresponding to l.v. ties in the score. Oddly though there are breath controller events after each note ...

Back in MuseScore Studio

Within MuseScore Studio l.v. ties will be useful for those looking to fully ring a note while leaving durations of neighboring notes unaffected.

TAB Ring plugin by @yonah_ag

Presently MuseScore 3.6 and 3.7 have an automated way of rendering very realistic guitar ring:

Check the TAB Ring plugin page and download it for free.

The plugin relies on the Len property and the Piano Roll Editor, and sadly neither of those features are presently supported in MuseScore Studio as of v. 4.5.2, thus the current plugin can't work in MuseScore Studio. But I hear there's a creative interim solution in the works!

Confirms my experience.

I was hoping that the l.v. tie length was a decimal version of the note's per mille time seen in MS3.6.2 & MS3.7. Unfortunately, as you say, it's only an engraving property.

If this value also affected playback length then this would be the starting point for realistic guitar sustain. (The finishing point would be for this to be available via the plugin API).

As it stands, l.v. ties really have limited application because of the 'droning' effect of allowing notes to ring which really should have stopped. This places MS4's l.v. ties on the same footing as Guitar Pro's "Let Ring", (which also attracts complaints about droning), so at least it's in good company.

One easy to implement 'quick fix' would be to use the same approach as TablEdit, where l.v. ties are implemented simplistically (but effectively) as "Ringing Notes" : the playback length is always double the note's face value.
