Figure out chords on midi device without adding notes

I have one midi keyboard - midi interface - and I need to figure out voicings of the chords . And also to hear what chord is going with melody . But if I play something and hear it through the app it will write a bunch of notes as I figure out the chord.

If I change the input then I di not hear anything .

My midi keyboard does not have audio out it has usb and midi out . I'm using the usb out .

I'm guessing there must be a way to compose while you are working on a part ?
