Bar numbers throughout

I would like every singe bar numbered. I've been to Style->Edit General Style->Numbers and Measure Number, Show First and Every System. No numbers appear. If I click Measure Number. Show First and Interval and set the interval to 1 every bar is numbered consecutively except the first bar on each system which is ignored. (I'm using the Linux version 1.3.) Anyone come across this or knows a solution. Thanks
