I can pause Playback, but cannot return to Notation unless it plays to the end of the piece. I need a way to stop the playback and return to Notation or Editing. I did not find a way to do this without Closing and Opening the file.
Use the stop button instead of the pause button. The upcoming version of MuseScore addresses this issue by removing the pause button since others have been confused by it as well.
I had trouble finding STOP button. I just realized the PLAY button is also the STOP button. Changing the display to a square instead of an arrow during play would make it clearer that it's a STOP button, or having a separate STOP button.
As noted above, I don't think you need to remove the PAUSE button in the next revision in the next revision to eliminate the confusion. Replacing the arrow on the PLAY button with a square would make it clear that it is the STOP button. Alternatively, a separate STOP button would also eliminate the confusion.
