Repeats not repeating at playback...

• Jan 15, 2015 - 17:44

So I pressed the "Play Repeats" button in the toolbar, and I played the piece... but it still runs right over the repeat lines without repeating...

Any ideas on how to get it to work?

Thanks! :)

I have a situation like this, only it repeats at the wrong place. I have repeat bars at the beginning and ending of the chorus, which I want repeated. I also have a Coda sign before it. In addition, I've marked the endings of Verse 1 and Verse 2 with D.S. al Coda, hoping the playback would catch it, but it doesn't. The Coda section {chorus} plays back only once after itself {NOT where I want it}, not after either of the 2 verses. How can I fix this? Am I marking it incorrectly? I've been a pop songwriter since 1984 and tend to write in that format {Chorus, Verse, Chorus}, even for my worship music. Unfortunately, it doesn't work well with "Repeats" when scoring. If anyone knows how to do this, please tell me! Thanks.

Hi Shoichi,
Okay, will do. I want it to play from the beginning through the chorus and first verse, ending on measure 79, at which point it should repeat the chorus {where I've put the "begin repeat" sign and a Coda sign} and go on to the second verse beginning with the one measure musical intro at measure 80. It should then play through from measure 80 until the end. Thank you SO much for wanting to help me! Hopefully, I've described the measures well enough. If it only will do this one repeat, I'll be happy with it, since doing a second repeat would make the score a lot longer than most choral arrangements. I have the last chorus attached to the end via copy and paste method, since I changed it a bit to incorporate an ending. I'm attaching my current score, since I've made a few changes since my last comment.
Thanks,
ShushannahR

Congratulations, Shoichi! You've gotten it to repeat the chorus after the first verse! Thank you! I'll have to work on a better segue, but it works great! Now, there's a second problem, which I may have overlooked: it repeats the first verse, instead of skipping it and going on to the second verse, which is what I need to happen. This verse begins on measure 80. Would you know how to do this? You may have to call in the cavalry again, lol! If it can't be done, my last resort would be to copy and paste the chorus after the first verse and let it play. As I'm sure you're aware, it's a VERY tedious process. Perhaps you know of a better way to go through the pages? I have Windows 8 and that bar on the right side always tries to come in and interrupt my page scrolling. You won't understand what I'm saying, unless you also have Windows 8. It's a PAIN!! Let me know if you think you can help with this. Thanks a bundle!!

I don't understand the coda sign that is apparently in measure 26 - it doesn't make sense. Also, it seems to actually be attached to measure 24. In addition, you have a "DS al segno" but no segno - maybe you meant to use a Segno instead of a Coda, and meant to put it in measure 25?

Also, you say "DS al Coda", but there is no "to Coda" to say at what point you are supposed to jump to the coda, and also no coda to jump to.

Hi Marc, the Coda sign is actually for measure 25, the beginning of the chorus. Have I placed it incorrectly? I don't recall putting a "DS al Segno," because I used the Coda, instead, and did put a "DS al Coda" just before the second verse. Actually, Shoichi is working with me, also, and he DID place the Segno and the "DS al Segno" in the score, which made the chorus repeat after verse one, but it needs to skip verse one after the chorus plays and go to verse two. This is where I'm not sure what to do. Perhaps this is where I need to say, "to Coda?" Would that make sense to put "to Coda" before the first verse repeats and the "Coda" sign at the end of verse one, before verse two? If I sound confused, that's because I am. I really appreciate the help you guys are giving me. My last resort would be to copy and paste the entire 9 part chorus after verse one. The hardest part of this process is scrolling through the pages. I've got Windows 8, which has this awful menu bar that fills the right side of the screen whenever I try to scroll the page. If there's a better way to get from one page towards the beginning of the piece to another towards the end, please tell me. Thanks.

Sorry, I meant "DS al Coda". But my point is, you used a coda where you probably meant to use a segno. Codas are not for jumping *back* to; they are for jumping *forwards* to 8after* a jump backwards (to a segno or to the beginning).

Not quite sure what you mean about scrolling, but the mouse wheel is the best way of moving around in MuseScore. Alone to move vertically, with Shift to move horizontally. Also the page up / page down keys, home, end, etc.
