Problem in synchronisation of cursor with playback

• Feb 9, 2010 - 09:27

OS: Ubuntu 9,10 - MuseScore 0,9,4 - Playback

In the course of testing the Playback panel I noticed a few things - that may have already been fixed. (In the playback panel, the rewind button doesn't seem to work - but I can drag the handle back to the beginning.)

More importantly, after I had been messing about with the tempo (speeding up and slowing down) during playback was running, I noticed that the cursor started to lag 1 (quarter) beat behind. I re-tested it again, in order to check whether the speeding or slowing caused the asynchronity. The second time, - to my surprise - the cursor moved ahead nearly one whole beat (roughly 3 semiquavers).

I wonder whether anybody else reported it (I haven't found any topic under the last 10 pages here) - or, has it been fixed in later versions.

I used the sample Mussorgsky 'promenade' for testing. Obviously, one couldn't notice an 'out-of-sync' phenomenon in a shorter pice. For testing purposes, I shall copy the sample on after the other; I wonder whether this synchronisation problem would build up in a longer piece

(I shall come back after, say, 6 times promenading up and down..).

The rewind button works OK - both on Linux and Windows!! My apologies....

My excuse is that I expected the cursor visually to go back to the beginning immediately, not "in the future when I may want to start a playback". Going (settimg the cursosr) bact to the beggining or to the end have been useful features In other applications and file editors (e.g. Ctrl + Home or Ctrl + End). It may help, for instance, in setting up the beginning or end of repeats; copy and paste sections etc. At some points it may be worth thinking about keyboard shortcuts for such jumps - that may be more efficient than using the navigator panel.

Regarding the issue of 'out-of-sync' phenomenon, on the MS 0,9,5 + Windows version I could not reconstruct what I experienced earlier. Having extended Promenade into 6 "stanzas" and having rushed and slowed down, rushed and slowed dow etc, I could only notice slight delay in the cursor movement (but even that may be psychological - after a while I could not really observe whether it was my perception or it was the actual appearance of the cursor.

Any idea?

If your computer is too busy with other things or particularly slow then the display and playback can get out of sync. It happens to me sometimes when something else is running in the background. If the playback is out of sync and it bothers you just stop playback and start again. Usually this is enough to fix it. If you are still having a problem then consider using a smaller SoundFont .

I had considerable delay on my netbook (which of course has a relatively slow CPU).

To fix it, I turned off MuseScore's CPU-intensive Reverb and Chorus effects:

1. On the Display menu, click Synthesizer. The Synthesizer window appears.

2. Click the Reverb tab and change "Room Size" to 0.

3. Click the Chorus tab and change "Number" to 1.

4. Close the Synthesizer window by clicking the "X" in its upper right corner. (There are no "OK" or "Cancel" buttons. There should be, as this is a dialog box with settings.)
