FR & Bugs for discussion

• Feb 13, 2015 - 22:08

I was advised to post my wishes here, then the post will be discussed, parsed, and properly catalogued.

Feature Requests

Display
Ruler to help with print previewing, and to set margins.
Tooltips on Keyboard Shortcut Actions
Often we don't know what the action or feature is, and it would help to know EXACTLY what will be done when the hotkey is pressed.
When piano display is showing, selected notes on score or piano roll should be highlighted on virtual keyboard
Shortcuts
Hotkeys for adding any palette entry or symbol
Shortcut for editing fretboard diagram, if one is selected (or the note it's attached to)
Paste Into as well as Over
Often i want to paste note data into a measure without deleting what's there. What we need is a Paste Into or Blend shortcut so that note data can be inserted into existing note data. Either that or a way to merge voices, because we could paste note data into another voice then combine them together in one measure or staff.
"Repeat last measure" shortcut (without having to select last measure)
If you want to duplicate the previous measure, and you're in the middle of Note Input, you basically have to come out of Input mode and select the last measure and then press the Repeat shortcut. What i need to do is simply duplicate the previous measure (without selecting), staying in the mode i'm in and and in the note position i'm in (in case i want to edit the copied data).
Assign specific notes to computer keyboard
Until i get a MIDI keyboard, i seriously need to be able to use my PC keyboard like a two-tiered organ to add in notes. I'm used to using ModPlug Tracker for composition, and it allows, for example, Z to represent middle C, S is C#, X is D, etc. This would make transcribing into MuseScore MUCH faster for me. A separate shortucut or modifier could be valuable for switching between octaves.
Lyrics
Option to extend underscore line to next note or rest, or at least the ability to type in underscores easily.
In older music, esp. in old hymnals, lines to show a continuing syllable were often extended thru the measure space until the next barline, note, or rest, such as this:
extender line example.png
Option to make italics or bold stick when inputting lyrics
Currently when entering lyrics that are in italics or boldface, the formatting disappears when going to the next word or syllable. Can you make this stick?
Score
Ability (and shortcut) to place pictures behind staff
I like the fact that we can add images into the sheet music, but when adding images, they are displayed over the score, which makes it hard to edit the staves under them. I often include drawings in my self-published music and would love to be able to either show only the placeholder of the image or push it behind the sheet music.
Ability to relatively position elements to the measure (to the left, right, or centered) even if the measure width changes
Sometimes i want added measure elements to always be positioned at a certain location within the measure (or its allotted space) no matter how much the measure width changes or what other elements are added.
Option for deleting notes for these processes:

  1. Extend previous note to this note slot
  2. Fill with rest (default now)
  3. Turn on note entry with available time selected

Way to define which repeat bar to go back to for playback
Box or lasso select (if not selecting on an element)
MIDI
Quantize after MIDI Import
Option for Volta hooks to always stay connected visually to bar line
Playback
Stationary cue point for playback, instead of playback starting from last selected note
If i could set a "cue point" to always start play from a certain point, until discarded, every time i push the Play button or press the corresponding shortcut, the playback would always start from there instead of the note i'm working on.
Pitch bend/portamento
Obviously missing, and seriously needed.
Note shortening definitions in inspector
I've noticed that when defining how short to play a staccato note, this isn't defined in the Inspector. "Note duration" changes the amount of time to play the note, not how long to keep sound on. EDIT: The staccato is assigned when using the keyboard entry on a selected note, but not when adding as a mark (from the palette).
Another option for Transpose: don't change notes on score (play at)
Currently there is no way to play a note at some other pitch than the one shown. Perhaps the Inspector can allow for modifying the played note in relation to the shown note.
Selection filter should allow only noteheads as well.
I'm sicking of selecting ther notestem when I'm trying to select the notehead!

Bugs:

Export to PDF doesnt export small slash noteheads, exports Maestro Times text too small.
Flats in keys do not show up in list in Transpose dialog.
When moving first note of tie, next note is selected as well, preventing navigating notes in 1st chord
If you have two chords next to each other, and you want to tie all the notes together, pressing the Tie shortcut will indeed create a tie between the two chords, but it selects both ties notes. This prevents you from going to the next or previous notes in the first chord so you can tie them.
Toggling measure visibility does not work when progressing thru measures in Measure Properties dialog.
When accidentally putting in 2nd line of lyrics by hitting Return (with none in 1st line), trying to switch text to Odd Line text in Inspector, or hitting Reset button, (because i can't go back to 1st line lyrics) crashes with exception.
Underscore in lyrics doesn't continue to last note when there are no notes after it.

Comments

Thanks for your comments!

In the future, it's best to post separate threads for each, but that would obviously be a lot of threeads. Maybe breka up category.

Anyhow, just to address a couple of things:

- I don't understand "paste into" - by definition, measures are always full, so there is no way to add new info except by using multiple voices. And you *can* use multiple voices. You can also implode them into one using Edit / Tools / Implode in 2.0 builds.

- While you can't make text formatting stick while entering lyrics, it seems to me that whatever you would be thinking of using this for would be much better accomplished by changing the text style, so it is applied by default. Or defining a custom text style and applying it to a given verse after the fact. Both are simple operations in 2.0 builds.

- Something very similar to the "cue point" exists already, as "loop" in 2.0 builds. Set the "in" point, and playback can repeatedly start there. Depending on your needs, that could do.

- Regarding the bugs, these definitely should be posted separately, with sample scores and/or precise steps to reproduce. I assume you are on Windows. Issues with PDF export in 2.0 builds are known and should be fixed very soon. I don't understand what you mean about flats not showing up - that's why a separate post with sample score and steps to reproduce would help. The bug with the lyric extender not showing up at first after entering on the last note was fixed after beta 2 (in beta 2, it does appear as soon as you do something else). The crash you *definitely* should report officially - separate post, sample score, steps, Preferably after installing a nightly build and trying to reproduce there. Lots has changed (for the better) in lyric entry since beta 2.
