How to activate the play modus
Hi together
Please don't watch my bad english, because I'm from Switzerland.
I just downloaded MuseScore. It seems like to be that program, I need. But I don't understand, the tutorial. There they write: to play the partition, you only have to press the play button. But these Buttons are not activated yet (I opened the demo windwos with the demo partition of Mussorgsky). How do I acitvate them and why is that not mentioned in the faq's? (In any case, I did not find it)
An answer would be fine.
Greetings from Franz

Do you use Windows or linux ? and which version of musescore ? If it's a prerelease try to get one higher than r1283.
I'm using Win XP and the newest stable Version of Musescore (V 0.9.3).

Hi Lasconic! I tried now the prerelease 1284 and it's working fine! Thank you for your Answer!

I tried 1284 and 1290 ( newest) and the playback will still not work ( Win XP Pro) I tried to download other sounds from that list but I do not know how to open them into readable files I can use.
The playback worked the first time I wrote a song, then never again. Maybe it did not like my music :)
Well, maybe someone will be able to help...
Thank you.

Read the troubleshooting section of SoundFont to get your sound back. Also read the whole page for instructions on setting up other MIDI sounds. There is no need to open the SoundFont files. Instead save the file in a folder of your choosing and set up MuseScore as described in the handbook.

I am stumped. I downloaded vs 1300, 1290 and stable 1102 and followed instructions for PLAY to work again. I downloaded Unison sounds from handbook directions, downloaded Sf Ark setup to decompress the file and saved it to PlugIn folder in MuseScore...... it all decompressed and shows up in I/O, I clicked on OK many times closing and opening the program as instructed..... but play buttons will not appear or display anymore in any versions.
Is there any other way to have playback? Otherwise, I really appreciate being able to print out sheet music again... thank you.

If you ask me, I would wait still some releases! There seems like to be many bugs in the Programm. In any case the win Version. Maybe in Linux it is better? I like the program very much, but I'll wait still some months by using lilypond.
by the way, is your sondcard ok?

I found on one of the present forums that using Portaudio was a good choice....I did, and it works (Ubuntu 8.10, mscore 0.9.3 1307)

Use version r.1300 or the stable 0.9.3 release. Make sure there is a check mark next to Display → Transport menu item. If you still have trouble take a screen shot the Preferences I/O tab and attached it to this thread. It might help troubleshoot your problem.

I checked Transport + experimented with the I/O settings and it worked. I now have that Unison file and it plays whatever instrument or voice the music is written for. I haven't tried brass etc, but will.
Thanks !!

I added this information to the troubleshooting section of the SoundFont page.

Here is what I think I did;
I downloaded the file from your suggested sound files, then downloaded < sfArk SoundFont Compression file > from the unison info page. I then decompressed the unison file with that and saved it to the Plug Ins folder from MuseScore.
Then I opened Preferences: I/O and designated that decompressed file as my Sound Font. I checked the Port Audio box, and although there was nothing to select from the drop down boxes, I clicked on OK. Then under Display, I clicked on Transportm and then on Play Panel. It wass either that time or one time after closing the whole program and opening it up again that when I clicked on Transport and Play Panel that a new box opened with a play button and a speed and volume control.
That's it. Whatever voices are written into the score now play... including sounds similar toi piano,m brass, tuba etc etc.
One thing... it does not play repeats, 1st endings etc... it just plays right through the measures.....
I hope others can duplicate this. It is terrific, so far.

There is a button in the Transport toolbar, right next to the play button called "play repeats on/off" (if you hover over it). If it is not pressed in then repeats will not be played. If it is pressed in and they're still not being played, then if you can post the score which has the problem and specify which revision you are using, we can figure why that may be..

When I click Transport, and Play Panel, another little window opens with Play, Pause and Rewind. Volume and Tempo slides too. No Play Repeat button that I can see....

The Play Repeats toggle button is on the Transport toolbar. It's not a separate window, but it's in the toolbar.
See attachment.

I lost that toolbar the second time I opened the program.... I was never able to get it back. I somehow got this new window that opens up with a play button... see above explanation..... and there is no repeat option in it :(

Make sure there is a check mark next to the Display → Transport menu item. This brings up the playback buttons on the toolbar and option to playback repeats.
In reply to Make sure there is a check by David Bolton
No, even placing the check mark there does not bring back the same buttons again. As I said, I am getting a new window with playback, and interestingly, it has a speed control so I can select best tempo for my scores.
When i use muse score, it only allows me to use one instrument at a time. I can't hear other instruments playing. For example, if i go on piano and put in notes, it won't let me hear the guitar. is this normal? by the way, the drums sound really weird.

If you set up a General MIDI SoundFont it will fix this. For instructions see: SoundFont . Version 0.9.3 does not play back the drums correctly. Drum playback is fixed in the prereleases for 0.9.4, but work on drum input is not yet finished in the prereleases.

See the troubleshooting section of SoundFont to get your sound back. No date is set yet for the release of Version 0.9.4 but prereleases are available.
