Rename "Staff Properties" to "Staff/Part Properties"?

• Mar 8, 2015 - 02:29

Following on the heels of my recent succeses convincing name changes in the software to "Image Capture" (from "Screenshot Mode" and "Foto-Mode") and to "SoundFont" (from "Soundfont" and "soundfont"):

What about renaming "Staff Properties" to "Staff/Part Properties"?

The thing is that the "Staff Properties" window clearly does include both a "Staff Properties" and a "Part Properties" section, so why doesn't the name of the window and the corresponding context menu item match?

I agree there are issues and inconsistencies with the naming between "Staff", "Part" and "Instrument". It goes beyond just the label of the dialog, though. It also extends to things like, what do "instrument name" and "part name" in that dialog actually apply to, how does the part name in the dialog relate to the part name in the parts dialog and the title on the tab for that part, which of these actually shows up in the mixer, etc. I've brought this up before, but it's a bit of a can of worms, really, and I think it's probably good enough for now.

And to add to the confusion there's also excerpt. so sometime part means instrument, sometimes it means excerpt. Every instrument has at one or more staves, every excerpt contains one or more instruments, still both an instrument and an excerpt are called part in the GUI... also very confusing to translators.

Oddly, now the window is named "Staff/Part Properties"—slash and all. The context menu item doesn't match the window name, though—still just "Staff Properties…"
