MS with VST in Windows 7

• Apr 20, 2015 - 13:37

I´m very interested in using MS 2 (or in any case in MS 1.3) with VST VSTI in my W7
64 bits computer
I have read the very long post of Leonardus : https://musescore.org/en/node/33491#comment-153146
Discussing the subject: MS2 can not be used with VST in Windows 7
At the end of this post Church organist has find a alternative method to solve the problem that could make possible using it He purpose use MS2 with Jack+ Loop be+ Live Professor + Linux Player He tried it in W8 that worked fine and he is asking for people with W7 try it and tell us how it works
Well I have done all that and all works fine how he says, except MS2 that crashes in any way I used when I do the set up for Jack in the Preferences tab
My questions are : Must it works fine? I’m configuring something wrong ? MS2 for Windows 7 has a bug or incompatibility for using Jack set up with loop be etc. and now is impossible to do it. Has anybody tried it ?
If it must runs fine please show me in detail how to do it and I’ll do a manual and a video
Thanks in advance

Do you have JACK running when you set up the preferences tab in MuseScore?

I found in WIndows 8 that unless you did MuseScore got rather confused and hung for a long time, and on one particular occasion I had to terminate it from the Task Manager.

I am still working on things regarding MuseScore, JACK and 3rd party audio applications, and am gradually gaining expertise. I am also working on an Ebook which I'm expecting to release this summer during my slack period for work in August.

The one area I am drawing a blank on at the moment is enabling MIDI sync between Sonar and MuseScore. MuseScore will respond to JACK's transport controls, but currently I haven't been able to get JACK to recognise MIDI transport controls from Sonar. I do have some ideas on how it might be possible, but I'm still working on it.

IMO Live Professor is a bit of a blind alley, one reason being that it has no 32 to 64 bit VST bridge so you can only run 32bit VST plugins on the 32bit version (and presumably, although I have not tested it, 64 bit plugins on the 32 bit version. The only reason I was using LiveProfessor was because that was the setup Leonardus had, and I wanted to show that it was working, and that LoopBE getting flooded with MIDI messages from MuseScore2 was the problem.

Since then it has emerged that the MuseScore2 synthesiser setup was flooding LoopBe and igevorse has altered the MIDI code in MuseScore to prevent this.

KXStudio's suite of apps looks far more interesting, although I haven't finished learning about them yet.

Also I would recommend you use LoopMIDI instead of LoopBE, for the simple reason that you have control over the creation of LoopMIDI's ports but you don't with LoopBE. consequently it is far too easy to end up with LoopBE flooded by a feedback loop than it is with LoopMIDI.

Let me know how you're getting on with it, and let me know if there are ways in which I can help.

Hello Michael
First I give you thanks for your friendly answer and for your job in MS forum and also how a developer and also in Yotube I know that you run W 8 so if you need testings in W7 or any other kind of testing I can try it .Feel free to ask me for I’ll be glad to do it . If you prefer, you can contact me at gtirinin@gmail.com
I had Carla before I read your past long post and can not get that MS appears inside for doing connections
In order to work with Loop Midi first of all what i did this morning was uninstall Loop Be and after I tried to open MS 2 and it crashes, again and again so I decided to uninstall MS2 and reinstall. I think it was not completely uninstalled cause when I installed MS again it crashes again and again so I can not use MS2 I guess what happens is when uninstalling remains in the computer several custom preferences and registry keys etc. and when I install again MS and I try to open the first thing it does is looking for this and crashes. What appears first when I try to run MS for the first time after it has been installed is a box asking you if you want to restore the last session
One time I get to apparently open MS I can see in I/O Preferences Tab was : Midi Input:MM SystemLoop Be, Midi Internal MIDI

Please let me know what I have to remove manually, in another way I’ll never get to use MS.2
Thanks in advance

OK - first of all you need to do a Factory reset of MuseScore. Uninstalling it doesn't work as it leaves registry entries to do with default file settings etc whereas doing a factory reset clears all this junk out and enables you to start with a clean MuseScore2 installation.

In case you don't know how to do that, have a look at this handbook page.....
https://musescore.org/en/node/35956

Once you've done that you shold be able to open your MuseScore installation without it crashing.

You will, however, have lost all the JACK configuration stuff so you will need to redo that.

Make sure QjackCtrl is running and that JACK has been started before you configure MuseSscore 2 to work with JACK and all should be well.

If not, come back here and we will try to work out why :)

Hello
Thanks for your help. I have done what tells https://musescore.org/en/node/35956 and write -F in the Open dialog of Windows etc. Then I tried unsuccessfully to find the files
C\Users\\AppData\Roaming\MuseScore\MuseScore2.ini
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore2\
Then I uninstall Loop be and MS and restart Windows and install MS.2 , restart windows and when I open MS the first thing that came was the box asking if I want to restore the last session(that means that the removing was not complete)
And MS crashes when I try to open files with the traditional option “Open” from de File menu or from the Open button or the Start center . I can drag and drop files into MS and the most of them can be opened ( some not) I can open a New file, write, play and save it But I need to do more test.
I think MS 2 will take many months to be able to manage VST so meanwhile I could, if it is possible use MS1.3 for VST in my W7 64 bits computer. I have read many post about it in the forum and seen videos in Youtube like the Alvaro Buitrago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkXVQ9nCvcE and also in his blog I have tried step by step but I get no success (perhaps because of my jack version is 1.9.10 and they used old versions like 1.9.5 )
Do you know if it possible to use MS1.3 with Jack loop be and a VST Host like Minihost or other in order to make an assignment of different instrument to different vst, and how to do it ?
Thanks in advanced

It sounds as though there may be something else at play here, maybe one of the programmers on the development team can help here? Because I have absolutely no idea why a Factory reset wouldn't work.

One thing to try though - the Appdata folder is a hidden folder, so unless you have "Show hidden files" enabled you won't see it in Windows Explorer.

Also you need to insert your username so on my system the path to the folders is......
C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\MuseScore\

and.....
C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore2

JACK will work with 1.3 I've never used Minihost but I have had MuseScore connected to my Sonar DAW software - theoretically anything is possible if you use the JackRouter ASIO driver and the host you want to use is ASIO compatible.

I will check out minihost and see whether it works.

Hello Michael
I had enabled the folder view and I can see the hidden folders. Perhaps de path in Windows 7 is other, as in my last installation neither exist this folders I’ll put a new post in Support and bugs and also I shall install "Revo uninstaller" that creates a list of the files when you install a new program and is famous for his ability removing the junk that many programs let. When I’ll reach MS properly installed MS2 you just have to let me know if you want I do some testing in W 7
I’ll continue testing in MS 1.3 and if I don’t have good results I’ ll continue creating and modifying sf2 like I ‘ve been doing so far (I have done more than 100 sf2 for my own use, just for MS) to fill this VST lack . I would like that MS had better sound features because I also feel MS somehow as my Project (I'm sentimental) and I would like that it was like the better ones in the field of sound Like many other user I have others programs that I use for VST and I like to experiment with them working together to get the sum of their better features If I have success I’ll try to let you know
Many thanks for your help
