4 part vocal

• Apr 23, 2015 - 12:56

I am entering a four part vocal piece. The treble line is fine. BUT, my bass line has a whole rest above each measure, even with both voices entered. I can not seem to get rid of them. When I add more measures, it did not happen. Suggestions as to what to do.

I guess you don't the Bass line as voice 1, do you?
Don't confuse voice (like Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass) with voice (rhythmical indepentant chords in same staff) ;-)

Every staff in MuseScore has at least voice 1, and can have voice 2, 3 and 4. Only the rests of the latter can get removed.

In a closed score SATB, you'd have Soprano on voice 1 and Alto in voice to of the tops staff, treble clef, Tenor and voice 1 and Bass as voice 2 in bottom staff, bass clef

Click carefully on a note or rest that confuses you, and look in the mode/status line at the bottom of the screen, which will tell you what "voice" within the staff it belongs to. Rests in voices other than 1 may be deleted if you don't want them to appear. If you don't think you're using multiple voices per staff, you may be entering notes in voice 2, 3, or 4 not knowing it. Look at the "1 2 3 4" indicators at the upper right and make sure you are entering in voice 1.

To be clear: *each staff* can have up to four voices, and voice 1 is the default voice for each staff. So if you put SATB all on staff (I know, that's crazy, but *if* you did), they should be voices 1, 2, 3, 4. If you put SATB on two staves, they voices 1-2 on the top staff, voices 1-2 on bottom. And if you put them on four staves, they are voice 1 on each staff.

Welcome aboard.

Read the forum responses above about voices. Also, see:

To fix the score:
1. Select all measures in the bass line with the unnecessary whole rests. (Click on an empty spot in the first measure, then Shift+Click on the last measure to select them all.)
2. Use menu item: Edit / Voices, and exchange the voices so that you have voice 1 filled with notes. For example, if you had entered your bass line using voice 2, simply 'Exchange Voice 1-2'.
3. Now, all those unnecessary rests appear in a voice that can be deleted, so right click on one of them, then Select -> More -> Same voice -> OK -> press 'Delete' on the computer keyboard.

Regards.
