Numbering of verses

Can verses be numbered? I'm using MuseScore for church choir work, and I need to be able to number verses of choral pieces. Windows 7 is my OS. Thank you.

Actually, in version 9.6.3 I found a work-around. Use Create/text/dynamics. Select any dynamic figure, such as piano or forte. Drop it onto the staff preceding the verses. Double click on the figure and type over e.g.,

Hit enter after the period on each of the verses to insert a newline, except the last verse. Then click in a safe blank area to set the text. Right click on the text once and from the context menu select properties. Adjust the font and size to match the font and size of the verse texts. If you don't know the font of the verses, right click on a verse syllable or word to get its properties. Finally, you will probably need to adjust the x/y coordinates to match the verses. You can do this from the properties dialog, or using the Ctrl+drag method. It takes some playing around with, and is a bit pedestrian, but it works.

I have a way that requires a small amount of work but I like it because the numbers end up exactly in line with the lyrics. It basically consists of creating a "dummy" note at the beginning of the score, assigning numbers to it in the form of lyrics, then deleting the note and setting the resulting rest as invisible:

1. Right-click on the first measure of the song and select "Measure Properties".
2. Modify the "Actual" beats per measure to one more than the measure currently has.
3. Cut and paste the notes in the first measure to the second beat of the measure so that the extra beat is at the beginning.
4. Create a note that is the same duration as the rest at the beginning of the measure on any pitch.
5. Click on the note you just created at the beginning of the song and type ctrl+L to enter lyrics.
6. Type "1.", return, "2.", return, etc. for as many verses as you need.
7. Click on the first note of the song and hit delete. The lyrics (numbers) should stay there.
8. Right-click on the rest that is now at the beginning of the song and select "set invisible" (if you only care about printing the song out and not playback in Musescore you can certainly just set the note we created at the beginning of the song to invisible instead of deleting it to create a rest, but the rest obviously is better if you want to play the song back without hearing an extra note at the beginning).

This works for me... I hope someone else can get some good use out of it as well.

That sounds like the same thing as was recommended in the first response above, no? I use my method because if you want the numbers to line up, it's neater and quicker than manually doing it (it's true you can use the left arrow to adjust, but then you can only adjust by a space at a time. To actually have them line up you'd need to manually adjust, which is tedious, and if you ever change the number of measures or spacing in your first line you may have to readjust anyway). The drawback of this method is that your numbers and lyrics are pushed a bit into the first measure, while verse numbers often appear under the clef in published music. In any case there doesn't appear to be a perfect solution yet and this would be a great addition to MuseScore's already impressive functionality.
