Imported dotted notes changed to tied notes
I opened a midi file in which the song has a number of dotted quarter notes. All these were changed to quarter notes and eighth notes with ties in the resulting score. This I find confusing in making comparisons with my original written score. Is there any way to control this so that you can elect to have dotted notes instead of notes with ties. Perhaps a preference selection to default to dotted notes instead of ties?
Thanks,
Don

Probably there are ties because anther part of the chord is moving, no?
What is the origin of your MIDI file? MIDI is not a very good format for music notation. For more details see [[nodetitle:Export]] .

No chords at all, yet. The MIDI file came from PhotoScore Midi-lite scanning of my paper lead sheet., which I then edited within the limits that that program allows. It only saves in MIDI format, so this was the file that I opened in Musescore for further editing before I then plan to open in Jammer Pro to input chord symbols and build an arrangement. In other words, this was just to get the melody down correctly..
The melodic rhythm will be the same for playback, of course, whether it is notated with dots or with ties, but I was hoping there was a way to keep it in the dotted form as originally written. It would be nice if there were some sort of election in Musescore to accomplish this for the format of the whole song.
Thanks for reply and for the link.

Does PhotoScore export to MusicXML? If so the file format will to a much better job of preserving your score.

Good question. The Midi-light version ($24) that I have only saves in MIDI format, which I now have learned will not save dotted notes. I would need to get Ultimate PhotoScore ($249) to save in MusicXML format. Well, since the ties will sound the same, I think I can adapt to the visual picture for now. Thanks.

Could you share the MIDI file for others to look at?

Attached is a file with one of the staves which shows what occurs. Each quarter note and eighth note which are tied were originally a single dotted quarter note before saving in MIDI format.
BTW, I am wondering if I attached this file in the easiest way, which was to save it to my hard drive, and then browse for that file. Is there any other way to copy and paste an example to this forum?

If there is anything I can do to speed implementation of an import preference to choose dots over ties, Let me know (I write code).
My wife, who is the composer, found this to be a deal breaker, as the music is much harder to read with ties vs dots.

See the development page if you are interested in taking a look at the code. Help is welcome. All my code contributions have been small or conceptually simple so you don't have to be a wizard to help improve MuseScore. If you have questions along the way, please ask.

I'm having this problem too.
I also can only import from Midi and the ties make no sense at all.
Has anyone come up with a fix for the import problem, or Is there any way of globally changing the tied notes to dots after importing?
Lyrics make no sense at all when applied to tied notes.
As someone said above - sadly this will be a deal-breaker for me too. I simply can't send out scores that look like this.
Cheers
Tom

Where are your MIDI files coming from?

ProTools 7.1..1

I use Reaper and Sonar, and have tested midi files from both. Both look terrible when rendered with Musescore. More ties than a Fathers Day sale!
For comparison, I downloaded a trial version of MidiIllustrator (http://www.midiillustrator.com/), which does a great job. Better than Sebilius in my opinion, although a little heavy with the rests...
