Initial volume on Play Panel

• Jul 12, 2015 - 12:06

I would love to be able to use Preferences to reset the volume on the Play Panel so that the initial volume setting would be softer than than 100% (which is the default volume it opens with).

I usually forget to reset when I open a file and then, when I use the playback, the sound is embarrassingly loud if I don't have earphones on (think internet café); and, if I am using earphones, the sound is pretty deafening.

My solution at the moment is to set my preferences so that the Play Panel opens when I open the app., which reminds me to immediately reset the volume; but it would be good if I could just set the initial volume where I wanted it and not have to repeat that with each file.

I just want to add that there are different levels according to the soundfont files we use.

I mean, if I create an score and set some specific level (synthesizer window) and I save into the score as "predetermined level", it will be that expected level, when I play the piece, IF (and only if) I use the same soundfont I used when I create the piece. If I change the soundfont, the level will be different due the soundfont files internal level.

So... unfortunately, it isn't a "simple" issue.

BTW: There should be an standard about the instrument level (balance) inside those soundfont files. Just my idea.

Greetings!!!

It should be noted that "Set as Default" and "Save to Score" are two separate things. Both of them include the volume setting as well as the list of SoundFonts loaded. "Set as Default" makes it so that those settings will be loaded by default in future, while "Save to Score" hides the settings inside the score so that they can be recalled by clicking "Load from Score."

So, for example, you can have as the default Synthesizer settings a certain SoundFont at a certain volume level, and have different Synthesizer settings saved to a specific score using a different SoundFont at a different volume level.

Thanks to all who responded! Your suggestions were great and have solved my problem.

I still think that it would be good to have something in Preferences that where you could also set this default volume, rather than having to go to the Synthesizer panel. It's a matter of good UX (user experience). Those of us who use MuseScore mostly for it's transcription properties may have never needed to access that panel (I had never opened it before) and so won't find this way of setting a different default volume.
