problem: pdf text cut-off

• Aug 3, 2015 - 07:27

Hello!

I have the following problem and look for a solution:

When I export from musescore into pdf and then open the pdf-document, from all (!) text parts in the score (title, composer, instruments, tempi markings, etc) the top 1/3 is cut off and not visible. On the other side all (!) notes, accidentals, slurs, etc are shown correctly and in full. What do I have to change in the settings or what did I make wrong??

Best,
Tobias

I have the same problem with horizontal stripes of text lines being cut out in the PDF, but it depends on the operating system and PDF viewer:

- Can consistently reproduce the issue on a Windows 7 laptop with Firefox 47.0 and PDFs produced with MuseScore 2.x. Still no issue with older PDFs coming from MuseScore 1.x
- Cannot reproduce it on the same computer when using Acrobat instead of Firefox.
- Cannot reproduce it on an OpenSuse Linux PC, neither using Firefox nor the Okular PDF viewer.

If someone wants to investigate this more but has no computer to reproduce the problem on, I'd volunteer to give feedback on PDFs you send me.

In order to help, we'd really need you to attach the specific score (MSCZ file) you are having problems with and precise step by step instructions to reproduce the problem. Are you saying the same PDF opens ok on OpenSuse but not on Windows 7? If so, sounds like a bug in the PDF readers on the Windows 7 machine.

I can see the PDF text slicing problem with pretty much any score, including the one already attached to this ticket. There are not many instructions I can give: Just export a PDF from MuseScore 2.x, and open it in a PDF viewer. If the problem is visible on screen in the PDF viewer, then for me it is also visible when printed on paper.

I created a tiny test score, attached as "TestScore20160726.mscz".
The exported PDF file is attached as "TestScore20160726.pdf".
Both creation of the mscz file and the PDF export were done on Win7.

I attach also screenshots of displaying this PDF file on my Win7 laptop using different viewers:
- "TestScore20160726_Win7_Acroread.png": Text looks fine in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC 2015.017
- "TestScore20160726_Win7_Firefox.png": Text appears cut in Mozilla Firefox 47.0.1

You wrote "sounds like a bug in the PDF readers". I agree that the problem is clearly related with the PDF reader program, but in a subtle way, since similar versions of Firefox show different behavior on Win7 and on OpenSuse.
Another possibility is that MuseScore produces illegal PDF, which only some PDF programs can handle gracefully. Or MuseScore produces legal PDF that relies on features that are not well supported by all readers.

I did two other experiments that are perhaps interesting in this context: The text cutting issue does not go away when I
- print again the PDF in Acrobat Reader to a new file, or
- clean up the PDF file in Acrobat 9 Pro (PDF Optimizer)
and then open that new file in Firefox.
