Percussion Sounds

• Oct 14, 2010 - 02:08

I don't know if this topic has already been posted, but I have been trying to write some percussion parts. I don't know if it's because if the program isn't working right, but when I try to play the percussion parts, there's no sound. If there's a way to get them on the program (if there not there already), or delete the instruments that don't have sounds. This would be a huge help. Thanks.

Do you have notes on the percussion part? Do you hear sound from other instruments? Have percussion parts worked for you in the past? What version of MuseScore are you using? What operating system?

I am having the same problem as bassoonist8888, who submitted his problem in October, 2010. I did not see any further dialog after you asked him several questions regarding this problem.

I can tell you that I have tried some things on my own with no success.

I have Windows XP and my Dell computer is from about 2004. I'm using Version 1.2

When I write in notes for the tympani, all I hear is a faint clang, even on extended notes. I wrote notes for the snare drums with the little X's and heard nothing from them. I have written over 20 minutes of a symphony, four movements, not finished, with no percussion. I don't know about writing for percussion, but can follow the directions to put in the notes. I have erased any percussion that I entered previously.

I abandoned trying to input percussion months ago. From what I have read, I believe musescore was going to update their program to solve some problems, but don't know if this one is included.

I have listened to others' compositions that have percussion and I CAN hear the percussion on those files.

I tried downloading different soundfonts and still no success.

I'm beginning to think it is my computer. But, I can hear the other instruments fine.

Could you please offer some insight into this problem? It would be much appreciated.

Seeing a sample score and steps to reproduce a problem is isually a first step to being able to see what might be going wrong. At this point, we dont really know how your percussion staves are set up - what instruments are used - or how you are trying to enter the notes. Deleting all but a few measures of your score and posting a small excerpt would help. Also say which soundfont you are currently using. Percussion *does* work, as you are hearing in others' scores, so it must be something configured incorrectly in your score or on your system.

After you assured me that the percussion sounds do work, I re-examined all the information related to inputting the drum parts. I have been experimenting with the various drum parts It was my error and not my computer or the program.. However, the only way I can get the semblance of a tympani roll is by inputting 32nd notes. Attached is a sample with the 32nd notes. I tried writing the part with the tremolo symbol and again with the trill and got nothing but sound on the beat. Is there another way to notate it? The sound font I am using is TimGM6mb.sf2.
