Why the name transport tools?

This leads to strange translations, because it has nothing to di with transportation..

Where does it come from, how do the tools telate to transport?

Why not "Play tools"?

The term is old and is inherited from tape recorders/players, which had (and still have!) buttons/switches to control the tape "transport". It was so named because the tape was physically "transported" from one reel to the other when playing (or during fast-forward or rewind).

The label "transport" carried over to most music software very early on (because it performed essentially the same functions as in tape machines) and has been standard in nearly all DAW's, MIDI sequencers and the majority of other music applications ever since. Because of this, most people who use music software are already familiar with the term, so it would seem to make sense to continue using it.
