Saving files reverts automatically to Musescore2/scores and not saved directory

• Oct 2, 2015 - 04:11

I have read that the software was written to automatically save an open file to /Musescore2/scores and not to the directory it actually resides in. If you take the moment after the first save to go to the intended directory and not the default, then it save to the directory the user intends. This is basically contrary to every other piece of software in terms of saving a file; intuitively a file will be saved to the directory it was opened from. Think how annoying it would be if opening a file in Word that the first save goes to a default /Word/files directory.

While I much admire the software team for Musescore, a great free product, I believe the files should always save to the directory they were originally opened from. I know the first save reverting to /Musescore2/scores is by design and I suggest that the next update this be changed to the way software normally and universally works: always saving an existing file to the directory it was opened in by default.

Excuse me if I misunderstand.
Windows, for example, has the default folders for saving different file formats. It as well LibreOffice. But the user can choose a different folder.
Similarly MuseScore: under Preferences you can choose the destination folder you want.

And we have two options: Save and Save As ...
(But perhaps really I did not understand)

Your comment is helpful. However creating a new file it is not saving to the folder I set in preferences.

And existing files when opened will revert to the default folder and must be saved the first time to the folder they were opened from. I believe there should be an option, as most other software defaults that I am using - Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, Word, Excel, Audacity, Transcribe, etc. - that an existing file saves to the folder it was opened from in all cases unless told otherwise. Defaulting to another folder is confusing.

Save and Save as does not appear to be the issue. Save gives the issues I related above. Save As is used to save to another folder.

I am not quite understanding what you mean. Can you give a precise series of steps that reproduce some sort of problem?

'Save" always saves the file in the same folder from it was opened. That's universal standard behavior' MuseScore is no different from any other program in this respect. If the fle is newly created, then you are prompted to select a folder. It defaults to the last used folder.

"Save As" also allows you to select what folder the file is saved to. The only thing that might differ between programs is, what folder is offered as a default choice before you select the folder you really want. MuseScore will default to the last folder you used in this dialog, or to the default folder if you have never used Save As before. That's a pretty common behavior, although certainly other defaults might be possible Eg, it could default to the same folder the file itself resides in). But actually, I find the current behavior much more useful - my reason for using Save As normally involves wanting to save to a different folder.

How "save" and "save as" function and combined with Musescore 2 and older 1.0 files may have created some of the issues. But "save as" wasn't defaulting to the folder the file is in or the default preference, and seems to be defaulting as Marc indicated to last location used.

If I'm working on a score I just want to save it and not think about this as I work.

Of course, and once you have chosen a filename and folder for your file, that is exactly what Save does, every time, just like every other program you might have used.
