electronic piano midi input?

• Dec 13, 2010 - 19:42

Hi, I'm not sure where to ask this question exactly, and I'm not sure what terms to use to google it so I'll just ask it here.

Is there a cord you can plug into an electric keyboard and the computer so you can play a song on it and it will record the notes in Musescore? What is the cord called? Is this even a feature of Musescore? Do I need to get a specific keyboard, or will any electric piano do?

Thank you!!!

So you don't have a piano or you're wanting to know if your current model is capable?

What operating system?

If wanting to buy a midi keyboard, what price range? (not that I'm really an expert on this, it's probably best you do your own research. most sites will specify whether or not a keyboard has midi capabilities. from there, you just need a midi interface cord)

This is the cord I got: http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Converter-Music-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4E…

Cheap and works fine.

So, if I'm understanding correctly, you want to know if you can take a piano keyboard that you have and plug it into your computer and then input stuff using it?

Depends on the keyboard. If you talk to somebody at the place you bought the keyboard, they ought to know that information, and may even have the correct cord you are looking for. If it says MIDI somewhere on your keyboard, it probably can work.

As for MuseScore, it currently has capabilities of inputting pitches using a keyboard, but not currently playing something in tempo. See http://musescore.org/en/handbook/note-entry and scroll down to where it says MIDI keyboard.

Thank you for your responses, they were what I wanted to know. My keyboard DOES have MIDI capabilities, I checked - but unfortunately I really wanted this just for the rhythm transcription as I'm pretty bad at it. Is there like, a website or an application where you can tap out a rhythm on a spacebar and it gives you the notation? LOL that's what I need...

You might be able to record the midi and then import it into MuseScore. It wouldn't be very exact, but it would do basic rhythm and you could fix it up. It'd be more accurate if you did it slowly (I think MuseScore imports midi).

If you had something like GarageBand it'd work.

Or look up 'free midi sequencers' for your OS and try them out.

I just saw a starter keyboard on line and I was curious if anyone knows if it would work with MuseScore. It is a Yamaha PSR-E223 Entry-Level Portable Keyboard. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Gary
