Use Sound Card Line-IN??

• Jan 31, 2011 - 08:05

HI,
I am using Musescore 9.6.3.
I have a Roland ep 7 II keyboard.
I do not have a midi cable, but the keyboard does have that capability
I have sound cables going from the keyboard output into my line-in on the sound card.
Right now I can play the keyboard and have it come out my PC speakers no problem.
Can I use this software to capture what I play and create notation?
If so how do I do that?
I hope this can be done easily.
Thanks.

MuseScore cannot do this. Very little software can do it successfully. You could look at Transcribe! from seventhstring.com

Audio is very, very different from MIDI in more or less the same way a picture of the exterior of a house is different from a blueprint of a house. If you're going to build a house, you want to start from a blueprint, not a picture of what you want the exterior to look like.

So you will need a MIDI cable. However, I do not believe MuseScore has a mode where you can play something in real time and have it transcribed for you. You would play it one note at a time, telling it how long each note is. It's not especially faster than doing it with the computer keyboard. Even in program that do real time transcription from MIDI, though, the results often take at least as long to correct and get into readable shape as simply entering the music one note at a time in the first place.
