Rests in tablature

• Jan 18, 2016 - 14:52

Hello all,

I just have a little demand on showing rests in tablatures. In version 2.02 it seems that Musescore only shows a note-symbol instead of a real rest-symbol, if a guitar- or lute-tablature is chosen (see my example). That's not bad but it would be so much easier to read if a real rest-symbol would appear. While I didn't find any way to change this in the program I would like to ask if there is a possibility to change this. If not: could it be implemented in a future version of Musescore?

Thanks a lot

Hello,

Staff Properties -> Advanced Style Properties -> Note values -> Tick: "Show rests" -> OK

EDIT: ah, probably you want to say: by choosing in the instruments dialog box a Tab style French or Italian. Exact. I think it's by design.

As far as I know, there is not possibility to change that currently.
But I also would support that request:
It would be good to have real rest symbols instead of moved flags, as it is now.
I attach an example from a late baroque lute print: Beyer, Gellerts Oden.

Well, I've found a way to integrate rest-symbols into tablatures. It's a bit tricky and not very user-friendly but it works!

First I've copied only some rest-symbols from another score and saved them as a picture in jpg format. Then I opened the tab where I would like to put the rest symbol in. I inserted a vertical frame in the first bar of the system which contains the bar where the symbol should appear in and I pasted the jpg with the symbol. I dragged the symbol to its final position and minimized the vertical frame. It is possible to place more than one symbol into one frame by copy and paste. Ready!

ooops!! I just realized that I have chosen the wrong rest symbols in my last example...

Well, if you're willing to do it manually, then a much easier way is to simply add the rest symbols from the Symbols palette - press "Z" to display. No need for PNG's or frames. Just select the "missing" rest (it's there in the score even though not visible so you can click it, or navigate there using cursor keys), double click the appropriate rest symbol in the palette, adjust vertical position to suit.
