How do I insert rests in the very first measure and then notes? For example, 1/2 rest, 1/8 rest then quarter note and eighth note.

Rests are entered in note entry mode by selecting the duration as usual than hitting "0" instead of a note name. So in your example, "6 0 4 0 5 G 4 G" (using G as the notes).
