No Sound

• Oct 5, 2011 - 22:54

Hello,

In MuseScore, the play button is grayed out. Also the play panel does not open. I'm using MuseScore 1.1 on Vista 32-bit. The computer is a laptop from a member of the Toshiba Satellite series. I've had no trouble with this until now, I've been using 1.1 and previous versions of MuseScore up until now with no issues; what could have triggered this? I'm no technological genius, all I know is that when I press this gray triangle no sound comes out of my speakers hahaha. Can someone please help?

Apologies - I posted this just as I was going to bed last night and put it in the wrong thread :(

I wonder if your laptop soundcard has been disabled somehow?

Can you play back on Windows Media Player or other music players?

The other thing that immediately occurs to me is that the SoundFont file inside MuseScore has become corrupted or missing.

Have you tried re-installing MuseScore??

This happens with all scores; and yet iTunes, musescore.com, youtube.com etc all still have sound. I have tried reinstalling MuseScore, it did not help. I went to go to Display -> Synthesizer but it was grayed out. I also went to Edit -> Preferences -> I/O and "portaudio" is checked but the drop down menus have nothing in them, even when I click on them to see the options. The "portmidi input interface" is also blank. Could this be the problem?

You've hit the nail on the head.

This is almost certainly the problem.

MuseScore has for some reason stopped communicating with your soundcard drivers.

Unfortunately I don't know enough about the internal workings of MuseScore to further diagnose the trouble.

The problem could be on the Vista side of the equation - Vista has a bad reputation for this kind of thing :(

It is quite possible that Vista's security overkill has stopped MuseScore communicating with the soundcard drivers.

One thing you could try is disconnecting from the Internet and then disabling the Firewall - if that doesn't work, try disabling your antivirus too - it is not a good idea to disable either of these while connected to the internet!

If the sound comes back when you disable the Firewall then you will need to set up an exception in your Firewall settings for MuseScore.

If you do get it working again, set a system restore point in case it happens again.

Well, I've managed to solve the problem. I saw a nifty little button in the corner of the I/O tab that said "Reset to Defaults" so I was like, hey why not try it? So I clicked it, it unclicked "Use Jack MIDI Output" and I close MuseScore and reopened it, and now it's working again. If I look at the Portaudio area again, it says "Api: MME" and "Device: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Output".

Thank you everyone for your time and help for helping me solve this problem! You guys are what make this program so awesome!

Hi,

I have almost the same problem. And I already tried the "Reset to Defaults"-button, but this didn't help.
I also tried to start Musescore in reset mode. Same result.
I cannot view the synthesizer, because it is greyed. And the display-window doesn't appear, even if it is marked.

I'm confused.
I'm using Musescore 1.1 on a 32-bit Vista. And until now everything was working fine.
Also the sound is turned on and I can hear sounds on other programms.

Does anybody have an idea?
Thanks!

... but today it is working again.
And I seriously have NO idea why.
I didn't make any changes on the program or on my computer. When it wasn't working yesterday, I even restarted the computer and it didn't solve the problem.
Well, anyhow - now everything seems to be ok.
Sorry I gave you any trouble...

Now, all of a sudden, this same problem has returned without a solution.

I downloaded 2.0 R.2603 and opened a score with it, the buttons were greay so i gave up, opened 1.2, and had the same problem. Then I remember I had this problem before.

I tried the restore button - no good.

iTunes plays music fine, but YouTube seems to be having trouble too ...?

Have been having similar problems as listed below. I'm using Musescore 2.02 on a Toshiba Satellite C55-5300. Eventually my sound died for all media. Wound up downloading the latest Realtek driver from Toshiba's website and it was a newer version than I was running. Sound came back and was better than the original sound but the volume was lower but not problematic. Today the problem is back for Musescore, but if instead of starting the program from the icon I double click on a score, everything works fine. Don't ask me why.

For the last few days I have been able to press the play button and the score plays, but no sound comes out. I have tried playing other music from youtube and Windows Media Player and they all work fine, so it isn't the computer's audio or my headphones that are broken. I've tried resetting to default but nothing worked. I have musescore version 2.0.2. I hope that I'll have the same luck as other people on this thread and it'll sort it out itself, but seeing as it has been going on for quite a while now I doubt it. Please help!

I have a similar problem,

Im on ubuntu Studio 16 on a Dell xps 15 9550

I can only open MuseScore through sudo, or if jack server has been started.

When I open with sudo I get the following:

jorgeeduardojonas@jorgeeduardojonas-XPS-15-9550:~$ initScoreFonts 0x3c76990
Home directory not accessible: Permission denied
PulseAudio Context Connect Failed with Error: Connection refused
init PulseAudio failed
no audio driver found
Cannot start I/O
sequencer init failed
Ignore SSL error: 6 The certificate has expired

and with jack enabled:

JackAudio::connect
JackAudio::connect
Sample::decompressOggVorbis: open failed: File contains data in an unimplemented format.
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I have removed, purged, reinstalled, no luck so far,

Has anyone had a similar problem and found a solution?

Thanks in advance!

Jorge.

Thanks for the answer!

sorry, i meant as root from the terminal.

I tried reverting but I still have the same problem, in the I/O port audio has no options, and I've tried
with pulse, jack and alsa with out luck, these changes sometimes resulting in musescore crashing.

If I start musescore from terminal as root, I get this:

Home directory not accessible: Permission denied
PulseAudio Context Connect Failed with Error: Connection refused
init PulseAudio failed
no audio driver found
Cannot start I/O
sequencer init failed

If I do not start from terminal It crashes immediately.

Could you please help me with any suggestions?
Thank you very much in advance!

Some brainstorming in short:

It seems that pulse audio don't have any writing permissions in your home directory. Could you report the table of fstab?

Some several suggestions, you can try to solve your problem (not sure what happens and if something of these works):

1. Check if Pulse Audio is installed on your system

2. Maybe you should give your home directory user permissions with "chmod"

3. Install alsa and choose it in MuseScore via menu edit->prereferences->I/O

https://musescore.org/en/handbook/preferences#i-o

4. if you want to use Jack, here is a tutorial (it's not necessary to use Jack):

https://musescore.org/en/node/21159

5. to give MuseScore user permission, I believe the command is "chmod a+x mscore" or similar.

6. apply a new user in ubuntu and see if there is the same error message.

Please give feedback when you found a solution.

Hi Kuwitt thanks for responding!

1. Pulseaudio is installed in my system, although after I was tweaking around playing it through jack, (so i could use SuperCollider, Reaper, and still see videos hear music online) I probably broke something, and now for now I always have to start puleaudio manually:
cd ~/.config
pulseaudio --start

It is most probably something related to this issue

2. I have user permission for my home directory

3. I have alsa installed, however when I choose it in musescore it crashes

4. I have used Musescore with jack, however I didn't have to go through the setup that is described on the page, I will look into it.

5. It's odd, because it does has user permission.
6. I signed in as guest and had the same problems.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll keep on trying, and let you know if I have any luck,

all the best!

Jorge.

Is there another output as you described in the terminal when you're choosing Alsa and Musescore crashes?

Note: You could also try to start the appimage to exclude that the package is corrupted.

Note 2: A few last suggestions, i would try out: Are you use any other sound applications where the sound output fails? Could try to start MuseScore on an different desktop environment? It is able to change the sound system in the setting of your desktop environment?

In reply to by kuwitt

The output when I change the I/O to jack and crashes is:

initScoreFonts 0x36b4dd0
cannot create session file
Ignore SSL error: 6 The certificate has expired
Creating interface for ScoreView object
JACK: sample rate changed: 44100
Fluid:loadSoundFonts: already loaded
JackAudio::connect
JackAudio::connect
Sample::decompressOggVorbis: open failed: File contains data in an unimplemented format.
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

- Note, I will give it a look!

- Note2 I'v tried it while nothing else is running, and with other applications, same result.
- I could try to install another desktop environment and see what happens
- I can succesfully change from pulse audio to jack and viceversa through cadence

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

In reply to by kuwitt

Yes I have these options, but as soon as I change from pulse audio to any other options it freezes for a few seconds then crashes, and in the terminal I get the following:

Home directory not accessible: Permission denied
Home directory not accessible: Permission denied
ALSA lib pulse.c:243:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused

ALSA lib pulse.c:243:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused

Alsa_driver: Cannot open PCM device default for playback.
init ALSA audio driver failed
init ALSA driver failed
no audio driver found
Cannot start I/O
sequencer init failed

I don't know why there are permission issues, I have full ownership :S

Sorry for my ignorance, how do I check how my home partition is formatted?
I'm quite new to Linux learning and breaking things!

Thanks again!

I ran sudo blkid

I'm duo booting, so ubuntu is on p7, and swap p6

I'll revise the chown settings, and folder owner, reading writing permissions because there definitely seems to be a problem there

hahaha funny I was just checking out that link!

with sudo blkid -o list:

device fs_type label mount point UUID

In reply to by Jorge Eduardo Jonas

Not sure on which partition the home partition is located on Ubuntu.

I thought, normally there should be a separate mount point for /home like this:

device fs_type label mount point UUID
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
/dev/sda1 swap 16103da9-6e2b-40de-9ad8-730ca7070e9f
/dev/sda2 btrfs (in use) bc627efb-dddf-42f1-9a4c-042c441982f7
/dev/sda3 xfs /home 9135023b-2a9e-4ef9-b4dd-4f65f34a3225
/dev/sr0 udf BW_BDHN_FILM /run/media/****/BW_BDHN_FILM 2016-11-12-17-52-54-00

But this suggestion could also be a false trail.

In reply to by Marc Sabatella

When I try to start the application it crashes, so then if I try to start it from terminal without root I get this
output:

Sample::decompressOggVorbis: open failed: File contains data in an unimplemented format.
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

and If I run it from root I can use musescore, as long as no sound is involved, no playback at all,
even when the transport is not grayed out, after I press play nothing happens.
