What does Style-->Edit text style... actually do?
I had hoped that Style-->Edit text style would let me set default text styles. However it seems to have no effect whatever. If I create a piece, then change (say) the font of the title and click apply, nothing changes. Guessing that changes to style only affect subsequently created files, I exited and re-launched. Not only is the change not implemented, but it has disappeared and the font settings are back to the original. What I have I not understood?
I know that I can change the style of the title directly by right-clicking, but I don't want to have to do that with every piece I create. Can't I have my own defaults?

The settings in text styles affect elements that have not already been created *within the current file*. If you want to affect elements that have already been created within that file, you can right click them and select Text Properties. If you want to affect elements in files you have not created yet, then you can create a template that has your style settings; you can also save the style settings themselves. Not sure if there is a way to cause those style style settings to be used by default when creating a score "from scratch", though.
