Links in PDF Handbook

• Jun 30, 2015 - 22:37

Recently there has been something of an effort to improve cross-linking between Handbook pages—e.g., when a page mentions "text edit mode," change that to "[node:35996,fragment="text-edit-mode",title="text edit mode"]" for the effect of "text edit mode ."

I was just greatly surprised to discover that in the PDF version of the Handbook (meant to be downloaded for offline use) those links direct to the web page version, instead of linking internally to the relevant section of the PDF.

Is it possible to automatically convert those links to Handbook pages from web links to intra-PDF links (there may be a more technical term)? This might not be a straightforward implementation; since occasionally a "node" link is to a How To, for example, instead of a Handbook page, it might be necessary to set up a very targeted filter for every specific node number that is a Handbook page, and leave other nodes alone. Still, I think if this can be done, it should be.

For what it's worth, I can't duplicate any of these on Ubuntu except one, and that is a problem with the online documentation, not the PDF document. Perhaps you need a different PDF viewer?

Someone wrote that
"There are also blank pages at:
* Voices".

That's explicitly an external link, and the online documentation is indeed blank.

There are some blank HALF pages in the PDF, apparently because the screen shots are just a little too large to fit on the page.

In any case, it looks fine to me. I definitely do not suggest suspending the manual.

Link to essentially blank page removed. The page does have a link to a YouTube video on entering chords, which is not displayed. It may or may not be obsolete (didn't look close).

If the page is fixed, someone can add the link back to the doc.

I discovered I can edit this stuff instead of just reporting it. Duly done.

When I deleted the link I didn't realize that the page wasn't actually empty. It displays as blank on all my browsers. I don't know how to fix it, so I just left it. I wouldn't be at all offended if someone fixes the page and reverts my change.

It appears today is one of the days that the links in the PDF work, or perhaps Thomas has implemented a final fix?

As to the blank pages, on the day that that comment was written, they were blank, but that was fixed almost immediately, and there's doesn't seem to be a problem now.

Also, I wasn't suggesting "suspending the manual" per se. Just the offline version, which seemed to be constantly defeating its own purpose.

Just so we're clear here, the problem of links in the PDF file pointing to external links rather than internal links is still there. It's a very separate matter from the "How to enter a chord" link, which is _supposed_ to be external, and is now fixed.
