Sample of instrument

It would be nice to have a sample of each instrument played before adding it to the score. some instruments are unfamiliar.

My reply was regarding if anyone would want to use an unfamiliar instrument or not.

What you say is true. There are simple enough ways of testing the different instruments. They might be a bit cumbersome and time consuming if you are totally in the dark regarding what instrument you'd like to use, but it is most definitely possible.

I don't consider that the feature request from Chasity is a "must have". I would, on the other hand, find it to be a useful "nice to have" feature if it was available. But if it is complex to implement, then it's probably not worth it.

Good idea, but it won't work with soundfonts, unless the instrument is General MIDI (as in, common instruments you should already know). Musescore can't add unique voices to every instrument, so the obscure instruments just grab whatever common instrument sound similar (example: chinese Erhu gets violin voice, but they actually sound very different.) Best to just ask Google about obscure instruments.

Another thing: instruments will sound a lot more like themselves if you write them idomatically-- for example, guitarists (like me!) use a lot of slides, half bends, harmonics, and other unique techniques to embellish melodies. Musescore can notate and even play back some of these features, so keep that kind of thing in mind with every instrument!

I did sampling of all the pitched percussion, keyboard, and electronic musescore instruments where each plays a sample of notes for a measure, so you can hear what each instrument sounds like for all the instruments in those three categories as well as see the instrument name as the notes are being played by that instrument...

I've only been able to do a rough draft for the brass and woodwind instruments, so the names aren't accurate (half of the instruments in the brass one are called brass since it's easier to copy and paste the same instrument name and change it later rather than to create a new name for each instrument is why) so ignore the names in the rough drafts....also I will adjust the octave of notes played for some instrument parts in the rough draft to be within that instrument's range since some of the notes are either to high or low in pitch for some of the instruments in the rough drafts as well...not to mention, confusing and messy to see what instrument is playing what in the rough drafts, so I'm gonna try to clean it up so it looks like the first one where it's simple and easy to see what instrument is playing like I did for the Audio sample of pitched percussion, keyboard, and electronic instruments

Made an easy to read update for both free reed and brass instruments to hear every instrument in both those categories play a sample of notes for one measure (or two measures if an instrument part has two staves- treble and bass). The notes are shown as they are played along with that instrument name, so you can easily see what instruments is playing for the document. Hope it helps.

Hey, I made documents that plays a sample of notes to hear a preview of what all the Wood Wind, Free Reed, Brass, Keyboard, Pitched Percussion, Electronic, Plucked and Bowed String Instruments in Musescore sound like. The first document covers all the wood wind instruments, second document covers both free reed and brass instruments, the third covers pitched percussion, keyboard, and electronic, and the last one covers both plucked and bowed string instruments (also, the bowed string instruments are repeated 3X in order to hear the instrument played normally, pizzicato, and tremelo... You see the notes on a clef as well as the instrument name as the notes are played for every sample.
