brackets to show which hand is playing

• Mar 18, 2017 - 18:23

This is for complicated piano scores. Sometimes the RH plays a note that is part of a LH line, and it is complicated or impossible to move it into the top stave. See example of the A that the right hand plays in a LH pattern.

I created the "brackets" from 3 lines. It would be great to have a "line" that is preset, with handles on all corners, that would be angled and adjusted to fit.

I see there is a way to save custom lines, symbols. Can I save this 3-line construction somehow?

I was initially going to say that you can save each line individually into a custom palette and then apply all three lines to a note. Fortunately I tested how it works before I saved the comment. I turned the line vertical, saved it to a custom palette, applied it to an note and it appeared horizontal. Normally modified items keep their modifications in the palette, but not so for turning lines apparently.

Scanning through the master palette (z brings it up), I didn't see any thing like you have in your picture, but I didn't look at each item individually, I did a couple of searches until I ran out of ideas of what to call it.

I don't see a bracket in glissandos.. that can be turned like that.

I would do as Jojo suggested, use cross beam notation then use the line to connect the left hand note to the right hand not and then another to connect them back. Similar to this:

Wow, that picture did not look that bad in paint.

Thank you. This is what I was looking for.
Positive: It is linked to the note, so if the spacing changes, the brackets follow the notes. THis is not the case with lines.
It is also nice and straight/square. It was a pain to try to make my lines straight!

Negative: it is a little small. I would love for the ends to be adjustable, so that 1) I can extend them past competing slurs, stems, bars, etc. 2) I can make an angle other than 90º and then draw a line from one to another. This allows for multiple notes that are not necessarily in a line, to be bracketed together.

I solved my various cross-hand situations differently, some with these brackets (thank you!) and some with moving them to another staff and drawing lines. (This brings up another issue which I will raise in a separate post!)

Thank you jm6!
