Decreasing space between staffs

Where do you re-set the "default distance." ? I've tried it in Style/Page with every margin with no change.

This depends on what exactly you mean by staff distances. There are different types of staff distances, controlled by different settings. Grand staff distance is the distance between the two staves of piano music. Staff distance is the distance between instruments within a system - like in a score for flute and oboe, it is the distance between those two staves throughout the score. System distance is the distance between systems - like between one flute/oboe pair and the next. Each of these can be controlled independently in the dialog you mention.
If you continue to have trouble, as always, please attach your score and describe as precisely as possible what you want to do, and it will be much easier to provide help.

Ok - I was trying to decrease some grand staff lines while not others on a single instrument line. I had changed every value in 'page' except "maximum system difference" which I didn't think was applicable but apparently so ! That made the difference. Then I just had to use spacer between other lines.
