drum kit notations

• Jun 19, 2020 - 20:52

I am trying to do some music for a drum kit, so I need bass drum, snare, crash, ride, toms (1-3 or 4), Hi Hat, etc. I don't see these anywhere in the software. Am I missing it or does it not exist in musescore yet? Thanks for your help.

If you're writing for a single person playing that as a drumset, then indeed add the "Drumset" instrument, it has all those sounds defined for you. See the Handbook under "Drum notation" to learn more.

Hey everybody, thanks for the help. I am completely new to the software so still learning it. But I did find the drumset instrument, and realized that has most of what I am looking for, though some of the sounds are a little off from what I was expecting (closed hi hat has some sustain to it, figure it should be a shorter sound), nothing hard to deal with.

My new question is how to add more than 2 voices. If I am writing a basic beat, counted as 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &, ie closed hi hat 8th notes, and bass drum on 1 and 3, snare on 2 and 4, I can't get each sound as a separate voice (3 voices). I have the hi hat shown properly. added the bass on 1 count as voice 2 (I think, its not green so not sure). Figure I am trying to do something that can't be done, but then makes me wonder why voice 3 and 4 are even available.

Regarding hi hat - there are different sounds for hitting the cymbal with a stick vs closing it with the pedal, be sure to use the right one.

You can have as many voices as you want, but it's never necessary when entering drum notes. Normally all "hand" drum notes go together in voice 1, all "foot" drum notes go together in voice 2. It's not clear where you are thinking you'd need any more than two voices. In your case, snare in voice 1, bass drum in voice 2, hit hat in either 1 if you mean playing it with a stick or 2 if you mean pedal. This isn't just a MuseScore thing, it's how drum music is normally written.
