Showing the wrong sound name
Hey, I used GeneralUser soundfont today and Musescore put the right sound automatically for every instrument in my score. However when I checked mixer, all the sounds it showed were called Grand Piano. This didn't happen with HQ soundfont. Can it be fixed?
Comments
I guess this is due to that soundfont not supporting single note dynamics, and your score using the "expr" versions of the sounds that do use single note dynamics. Probably it's possible somehow for MuseScore to detect and fix this, but anyhow, I think that's why you are seeing it.

wait... non-expressive does not allow single-note dynamics?

non-expressive does allow single note dynamics, you just have to set it up correctly. There was a bug introduced where the synthesizer keeps resetting sounds if you don't use non-expressive sounds. @theotherjthistles said he was looking at it, but I haven't seen any PRs addressing it.

I think I can turn it back to expressive... I thought those sounds had to do with vibrato and such.

They are the sounds that use the default CC settings in the synthesizer.

I use non expressive sounds with CC11 in the synthesizer and get SND on all of my music. I NEVER use expressive sounds.

I use the default and the HQ soundfont and thw default settings and get SND with the expressive sounds

You’ve stated this before but I’ve never been able to reproduce, and according to my understanding it should be impossible. Can you post a short sample score where you get SND in, say, GeneralUserGS?
In reply to You’ve stated this before… by Marc Sabatella
Here's a sample with pictures of my mixer and synthesizer Dynamics tab. Use any sf2/3 sound font you want that has a clarinet.
I didn't use save to score because that is broke. I'm currently stuck changing every instrument with an expressive option to non expressive so my SND works correctly. CC11 doesn't play notes for expressive sounds at all.

So that means... We get SND even with non-expressive sounds if we use C11? Whack

Correct. As I mentioned, currently the synthesizer is broken and you must manually change sounds on every instrument to get non expressive sounds though. This is required every time you load a score.

I found one for the trombone but not the trumpet. I didn't listen to it since that would mean little to me. One was at https://vbfasr307.weebly.com/blog/saint-james-orchestra-soundfont

Thank you much! Wait how exactly do you download from that site? I have been there before but never figured out.

btw do you mean this site? https://www.flstudiomusic.com/2010/04/saint-james-orchestral-soundfonts…
it seems that it has harmon mutes too. and I didn't find any trombone mute. Perhaps you know any other? I only found VSCO's. But it won't probably play all the notes I want.

What? I never noticed... So SND will work with GeneralUser and C11 right?

Great, thanks for the detail! I can confirm this works with GeneralUser GS v1.471. Not sure why I wasn't getting this to work before.

If you told me you still didn't get it to work I was going to tell you to ask Ziya. I started using CC11 within days of SND coming out and followed his simple instructions. This is a far more flexible SND method than CC2 and should be the default IMHO since it works with almost every sound font...at least until version 3.5.

Still works in 3.5 for me, that's what I just used to test? I guess you mean you needed to take an extra step setting up the score - the issue with certain settings not being saved you've also mentioned?
Anyhow, as I recall there were some sound technical reasons why CC2 was the more correct choice (produces better results?) than CC11 even if it just so happens that CC11 might work with other soundfonts already. But I can't say I fully understood those discussions. I suspect, though, that maybe it was not fully appreciated just how much more flexible CC11 might actually be, because again, the official story seems to be that most soundfonts still won't work.

I haven't found one that doesn't support CC11 unless the instrument doesn't permit it. Also, I have no idea how Zerberus fits into this since I've never used a Zerberus sound font.

Isn't zerberus for sfz's? Also I don't know a lot about what CC's are and do but if CC11 makes most soundfonts "compatible with SND"(?) then why not make it default..

With CC11, the mixer requires a non expressive sound on an instrument capable of SND, like any wind instrument. There are no keyboard or strummed instruments capable of SND. There is also the other dropdown in the dynamics tab of the synthesizer that must be updated like my picture.

Should it be like that?
