Problems with Correcting Rest-Lengths
(here I used "Pause" and "Rest" interchangeably)
We want to make this first measure become a full pause:
If you know what to do, it's easy. Select the whole measure, click delete.
If you don't do it the optimal way, it gets messy. Here's some stuff I tried:
- If you select the whole measure and click 7 to make it a full pause.... yes, a full pause is entered. However, the other pauses are just pushed back and the new full pause doesn't get placed in the middle of the measure like it would be expected. Is this a bug?
- If you only select the first quater-rest and click 7 to make it a full pause, as you would act if they were normal notes, again, it works... This new full rest doesn't get placed in the middle of the measure either. Is this a bug?
- There's one third thing I tried that also just pushed back the rests, just like option 1) did... I'll add it here if I remember.
Anyways, what's the reason for those rest-correction-mechanics? Which of them are bugs and which ones aren't?

Select the quarter rest and hitting 7 also turns it into a full measure rest. selecting the enture measure and pressing Del too, but indeed selecting the entire measure and with that 2 quarter rests and one half rest, and then pressing 7 does not, that is just not really making sense, you don't want to turn all these 3 rests into full measure or whole rests

Unfortunately, that offsets the pause. Ty for the link to the handbook though, I understand that selecting multiple rests and pressing 7 shouldn't be expected to work.
A whole rest is not a measure rest. A whole rest is always 4 beats. This is true if you make it in a 3/4 or 6/4 measure. The rest and other rests in the affected measures are adjusted to account for a barline in the middle of a whole rest you enter. Similar to how it creates tied notes when you enter a whole note in a 3/4 measure.
A measure rest is always the length of an entire measure and starts on beat 1. To create a measure rest do one of two things, select the entire measure and press delete or press a beat 1 rest and press ctrl+shift+delete.
MuseScore is smart enough to know that a measure filled with any type of rests is empty, so it will be included in multi-measure rests when appropriate.

Interesting, thank you for the hint, i think I thought a whole rest was just everything.
Just in case you know, do full (>4/4) rests always look like black squares?

Unfortunately. Hopefully it'll be fixed in version 4. Besides Tantacrul for the UI, MuseScore hired okophonie as an engraving advisor so hopefully he'll implement normal measure rests.

By the way, are you sure about the whole rest thing? I mean, Wikipedia obviously isn't the most reliable source but it says, that usually, a whole rest is used... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rest_(music)#One-bar_rests

A whole rest looks the same as a full measure rest, except the latter is centered to the measure.
The former has a duration of 4 quarters, the latter the duration of whatever the time signature mandates

Could that be the difference between measure 1 and measure 2 in my third example? (In my original post at the top of the page)

eg could that be why, when replacing notes a certain way, the whole rests aren't centered?
