How to consistently align staff text?
I added a,b,c,d as four separate staff texts, by clicking on the bottom note (C3) of each chord. I then turned off Automatic Placement. I'm able to align a,b,c,d on the X axis consistently (above the double bar lines) but why are they not consistently aligned on the Y axis, even though the Y spacing is consistent (-12.50)?

Because they are aligning to their top edge rather than their bottom egde or rather baseline (the default for staff text)

Thanks; is there a way to align them to their bottom edge?

The "align to baseline" button is the one highlighted above. First select all the stave text, then set the alignment. After that you can set that alignment as the required style by clicking the S button on the far-right of the Inspector.

Thank you, Daniel! That's very helpful. What's the difference between "baseline of text" and "bottom edge of text" though? They seem to give me the same result.

Compare p and o

It's the difference between letters without a descender (like a, b, c, x, z) and letters with a descender (like g, j, p, q, y). If you use "align to bottom edge of text", the bottom edge varies between letters with and without a descender. So I always use "align to baseline" which allows any descenders to go below the baseline.
However, you are are making the job very much harder by attaching these texts to the bottom staff when you actually want them to appear above the top. Simply attaching them to the top staff (by selecting the rest, for instance) and they are perfectly positioned and aligned right out of the box, no need to manually adjust, no need to disable autoplace, etc. If you want them lower than the default, or further to the left, do this once, then hit "Set as Style" and all will follow suit.

Hmmm...well I deleted them and tried attaching them to the top staff (ttached). But they don't look vertically aligned to me.

Actually, MuseScore aligned it exactly as you asked - it aligned the top edge of the letters. And in this case the text includes the letters b and d which have an ascender:
As mentioned earlier in this thread, you need to use the baseline alignment.

Thanks! I understand. I replied to Marc because he seemed to indicate that attaching them to the top staff would give me the result I had wanted, but apparently setting/saving the style is still required.

And then use the "Set to Style" button!

To be clear: it works fine out of the box if you haven't changed the style settings. But you did :-). The default is baseline alignment, you must have previously changed it to top.
