Duplicate time signatures?

• Jan 15, 2021 - 23:29

Okay, first let me say that I would put this in the Issue Tracker, except I have absolutely no clue how to duplicate this because I don't know what causes it; it seems random. If I can find a way to reproduce it I'll report it in the Tracker.

Now to my main point: Has anyone else noticed their time signatures randomly appearing twice in a row in the same measure, right next to each other? It seems to happen randomly to me. This has happened before the 3.6 update and persists after the update. Does anyone know why this happens and/or how to fix it?

EDIT: I have an idea of what may have happened. I had a time signature change at the end of a page. Then I did the "Hide empty staves" thing, and that made the time signature not have to "cross the page gap," as it were. I think it kept the extra time signature that appears on the next page for some reason.

Is it possible this score was created in an older version - from, say, about two years ago? There was a bug then that could cause this, and although the bug was fixed, scores created with it could potentially already be "infected" but not display the problem until later after the layout changed.

Anyhow, if you attach the score we can try to investigate. Better still if you can figure out how to reproduce the problem, maybe by experimenting more with that theory you have.

The one thing I can tell you is that when this happened in the past, the extra time signatures were actually courtesy time signatures (ones designed to appear at the end of a system) gone amok and appearing mid-system when they shouldn't. The way to "clean" a score of these is to go to Format / Style / Page, turn off courtesy time signatures, save the score, reload it, then turn courtesy signatures back on. Probably wouldn't hurt to do that now even if the problem seems to have gone away for now.
