I can't run the latest version of MuseScore

• Jan 27, 2021 - 09:38

I updated to MuseScore 3.6.0 a few days ago but am having problems. It is able to open files but not play them back - the space bar doesn't work. And I am unable to initialize the panels with the function keys. (They register in the menu as being open, but aren't anywhere to be seen onscreen.) Inputting notes doesn't work either. (PC, Windows 10 Pro). MuseScore 2 still works perfectly. I also have 3.4.0 on my laptop which works fine too.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and the problem remains.

Could you give me some advice please?

I reset to factory settings (I don't really change much anyway) and it's still not working. It's very peculiar. There's no playback and it doesn't appear to be responding to the alphanumeric keyboard at all. For example F11 doesn't bring up the play panel ...

At first I thought it might be because I use an rdp from another computer - but even when I use my "music machine" standalone, booted from scratch, the updated MuseScore isn't working. I've checked all peripherals, done my latest Windows updates and so on. Computer is functioning normally with all my other software.

I just did a full uninstall on the machine as a standalone (so not via the rdp), and then downloaded and installed the latest version of MuseScore. The problem persists. MuseScore opens my existing scores quite happily and everything looks fine, but the playback function doesn't work via the spacebar and pressing F11 doesn't open the Playback Panel. The other function keys opened their relevant panels and the arrow keys move notes around once I select them - but no playback at all. I'm beginning to think I'm doing something fundamentally wrong! (I'm no MuseScore expert but I have been using it successfully for some time now.)

The alpha keyboard I'm using seems to function fine in other apps so I don't think it's a problem with that.

Sorry, yes, a computer (alpha-numeric) keyboard as opposed to a MIDI keyboard.

I'm confused because the problem I have is that I can't get anything to play back. And I normally initiate that by hitting the spacebar on my alphanumeric keyboard.

My MIDI keyboard isn't connected at the moment as in the main I do music input by touch-typing.

I will however look at the link you suggest and get back to you. Thanks again for your patience.

Yes, some of the function keys work - just not the playback. As far as I can remember - the machine isn't on at the moment - I can't play anything at all via any method.

I think I need to investigate this a bit more carefully. I am going to look at the link I was sent earlier and see if I can fix it that way. But it seems strange to me - though not impossible - that only the keyboard shortcuts related to audio don't work, while everything else does (I can get the palettes, for instance, and the navigation).

I think that if the playback controls at the top are grayed out, it means that this version of MuseScore hasn't found your audio device. Or the sound font isn't loaded. it's supposed to work automatically, but sometimes.....
Right click on the speaker icon on your taskbar. Select "Open Volume Mixer". You should see MuseScore listed as a device (if MuseScore is open).
Windows includes about three different audio drivers. MME, (W)DS, Wasapi, or more depending on what you have installed. You might need to experiment within MuseScore/Edit/Preferences/(I/O). As usual, have a look at the manual for some help.

Normally, I might not suspect RDP. But MuseScore is not always normal. Reinstall seldom helps.
