How do I do this?
I don't even know the proper name for it. I'm thinking of a short staff--from less than a full measure to several measures--written above (usually) or below (rarely) the main staff, to indicate an interpretation or performance guide for a passage. How do I create that in MuseScore? The attached image file contains a few examples of it.

It's called "ossia". A number of ways to do this, probably the best here is add a staff above the ones you have, add the notes, then right click it, Staff/Part Properties, and set Small and Cutaway, and also set "Hide when empty" to Always.

Thank you! Worked a charm. I suppose I should also untick Play on the notes in the ossia.

Or, on the ornament. Depends on which version you'd rather hear I guess.
