Have a look at the Handbook section about note input with a MIDI keyboard:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/note-input#midi-keyboard
It's important that you connect your keyboard before you start MuseScore.

I have done that and it still does not work...

Do you see it listed in Edit / Preferences / I/O under MIDI input? If so and it is not selected already, then select it. If it's not there, be sure you have an updated driver, 64-bit if your OS and version of MuseScore are, 32-bit otherwise.

I have a 64 bit OS and Musescore3. When I looked at Edit/Preferences/IO under Midi input it is not clickable.

Do you have the latest drivers for the keyboard?

The keyboard is 17 years old...maybe that's the problem!

I had a look through the manual for your Yamaha. How are you connecting it? And is this to a PC or a Mac?

It's a PC. Using a USB midi cable.

From the manual:
• When connecting the YPP-200 to a personal computer, first turn the power to both the YPP-200 and
the computer OFF before connecting the cable. After connecting the cable, turn the power to the
computer on first, then turn on the YPP-200.
● When connecting to a computer with a USB interface, use the Yamaha UX256
USB/MIDI Interface. Connect the UX256 and the computer with a standard
USB cable, then make the proper MIDI connections between the YPP-200 and
the UX256.
Don't know if this helps.

17 years ago I suspect it would have come with a 32-bit driver only. So yu might want to do some searches to see if a 64-bit driver is available for it. if not, you could try the 32-bit version of MuseScore.
