Hide instrument name--is this possible?
MS 3.5.2..., Win 10
The attached score contains two versions of the same piece, on the same page. In the second version only, is it possible to hide the instrument name? I've hidden the Voice instrument because it's empty there; I'd like to hide the Organ instrument name because it's superfluous with Voice hidden, but it affects both versions. There's no dialog (that I've found) to hide it selectively. With it selected the Inspector panel is empty.

I don't think you can but you could approach it from a different direction by not having any instrument names on the staves but by inserting a horizontal frame at the beginning and adding text to it.
The Staff / Part Properties dialog allows you to make changes to the instrument name, also make it empty.

Add new lines to shift the name up.

Yes, but the change applies to the entire score and would change or eliminate the name in both versions of the piece. In this case I want to apply it only to the second version.

Section break?

No, a section break doesn't do it. The score has one. You can choose to start the new section with long or short instrument names, but not with no instrument names. If you blank or delete the names it applies to the whole score, not just to the section.

Is it a problem to choose "short instrument names" and just make the short name blank?

Clever idea that actually works. Had not thought of that.

You can add an instrument change text after the section break and make it invisible but keep the same instrument. Then you can change or completely delete the instrument's long and short names from that point on (or until you add a further instrument change text). See attached.

The dialog in 3.6, where you did this, is quite changed from 3.5. I was not able to replicate this in 3.5, which I used for this piece. Am I missing something?

"Am I missing something?"
Well, yes... updating to 3.6.2. I am pretty sure that the way staff labels and instrument changes are handled changed between 3.5.x and 3.6.2.

Which dialog do you mean? There have been no appreciable changes to the the Staff / Part Properties dialog in quite some time. Edit / Instruments, yes, has greatly improved facilities to automate the instrument ordering, bracketing, etc.

You are correct. And you've sent me looking in 3.5, where I found Add Instrument Change, and can apparently use it as Steve Blower described. I had not seen that before. I've used Dylan Nicholson' solution, which also works well, and is a bit simpler.
