How do I continue a sound over multiple measures without striking the note again? (ie in 4/4 time, I'd like to hold the note for 8 counts without striking the not a second time)

By using a tie, even multiple ties.

I tried using the tie and it didn't work...then I tried using the tie on all notes in the chord, THAT did work. Thanks for the help.

Indeed, for more than one note to sound throughout several measures you need to tie the entire chord

Normally, if you enter the tie directly while still in note input mode - enter the chord, then simply click the tie button or press "+" - the full chord is tied automatically. Only if you enter the notes first then go back and try to tie them do you need to be sure to select the full chord before hitting the tie button.
