Bar rests not attached to lines

• Nov 11, 2021 - 18:52

Hi,

I created a voice 1 with bar rests and a voice 2 with small notes.

Now, the voice 1 rests are not stuck to the lines, so it is hard to see whether this is a 2 beat rest or a bar rest.
Well in this case it is obvious, nevertheless…

2nd problem: I positioned the quarter and bar rests in the score, then created the parts and have to position them again. It would be nice if the starting layout would adhere to changes made to the score, even if not synchronized later. If you want, I can make a separate thread to track this (one issue, one thread?).

Thanks,
Ben

Hard to say for sure what's going on just fro a picture - if you attach the actual score we can understand and assist better. Normally of course the measure rests should hang from a line as you say, so it must be something specific you've done that either you shouldn't have, or that MuseScore wasn't expecting and didn't handle correctly.

Looks like you've manually applied an offset to the rest, I guess because you used voice 2 for the cues? Probably might have been better to enter the cues in voice 1, although there are probably tradeoffs there. Anyhow, the different staff sizes between score and parts means the adjustments made in the score don't work for the part. So just reset it in the part then apply the proper offet there. It probably shouldn't have worked anyhow - the offset is in "sp" units which should scale. So it does seem to be a bug somewhere. I'd suggest submitting it to the issue tracker. Easy enough to reproduce, just create a new score, set the staff size to non-default, enter notes into voice 2, move the voice 1 rest, then generate parts.

No, I only nudged them via keyboard. Before I moved them, they were already in a "floating" stage.

Yes, voice 2 for cues. Tradeoffs of switching: e.g. playback ;-)

Never touched it!

An offset is an offset whether applied by keyboard, mouse, or Inspector :-). So yes, this appears to be the issue. Before you nudged them, they were placed precisely relative to a line - a ledger line, in this case, because you have your voices kind of reversed from the norm where voice 1 would be above voice 2. With the voices switched, the measure rest would be hanging from the bottom line by default Neither is what you want in the special case of cues - you want the measure rest in its normal position, I think. So either way you'd want to adjust. But having the cues in voice 1 does look better if you choose not to adjust, as then the rest separates itself from the cues nicely, even if the cue is more on the staff rather than above as it is here. Something to consider. Should be possible, btw, to get the same playback effect regardless of which voice is which.

Exactly - that's the bug I'm asking you to report :-). You applied an offset of exact 3 sp in the score, but somehow in generating the parts, this got mis-scaled, so it is no longer exactly 3 sp. Most manual adjustments we actually throw away when generating the parts, because the reasons for doing the adjustment in the score (e.g., to avoid elements on other staves) are often meaningless in the parts. But the ones we do keep, we should keep correctly. Here, we don't.
