Observations on MU4 massive stuttering, glitchy playback

• Dec 16, 2022 - 01:16

A tale of two computers. Both at least six years old. Eight gigs of ram and SSD’s.
Computer one. Had a format and reinstall of W10 last week. This morning installed MuseHub, MU4 and all the sounds. Loaded a large orchestra score. As expected, playback was laggy, stuttering, and distorted. What to do? Buffer size had no effect. Task Manager said CPU usage was only about 50 to 60 percent. Tried my Focusrite interface to no avail. I started copying instruments one by one into a new score to see if there was a problem I couldn’t see in one of them. I got down to the strings and noticed that in this new score without strings, playback was fine. I went back to the original score and muted the strings. Playback was fine. I unmuted the strings and playback was fine. ??? No Idea what will happen when I try this computer again. Can’t say that it is “fixed”. Then I moved on to..
Computer two. Loaded the same score and playback was bad. Ah ha. I muted the strings and playback was still bad. Tried my Focusrite interface. Playback better, but not good enough.
I have two more computers to try MU4 on. But the first two are the ones I use the most. I might be able to understand one computer having a problem. But two? All four?
Tune in for the next episode “Mystery in the Music”.

On my system, after upgrading memory, upgrading sound card/system drivers, on icore 5, stuttering continued, until someone suggested opening the mixer up when playing back. This cleared the problem with my system, maybe others this will too. Good work around. Updates need to address this stuttering issues, too.

Mystery in the Music.

I'd forgotten about this thread. Since then I have posted a "How To" about how to get good playback with MS4. It might take all of the settings or just some of them. But I have all four of my computers can run MS4. Even my vastly underpowered Surface Go. Don't forget to read all the recommended specs. Does this mean the "Mystery in the Music" is solved? We'll just have to wait and see....
Stay tuned.
