Playback on 0.9.5 issues
Hi there!
I am using MuseScore 0.9.4 on Ubuntu, and I have loaded 0.9.5 onto a friend's Windows computer as well. I have the Fluid General Midi soundfont loaded on my computer, but none on the friend's Windows machine. By default, MuseScore 0.9.5 plays just piano when installed onto a windows computer via the windows installer.
However, this presents me with the following problem:
I have written music for voices, but in 0.9.4 I changed the instrument from the "Choir Ooh" (or something like that) to "Grand Piano" in order for it to be able to be played on the Windows computer, as well as for the people for whom the music is written to also play it back on theirs. Yet there is no playback.
I have opened the file on the Windows computer and, in the mixer, attempted to change the sound to "Bright Piano" which seems to be the default sound for a vanilla Windows install. However, that does not work.
How can I get the sound to work, playing back on the default piano sound, without having to attempt to teach 20 people how to load soundfont files?
Thanks!
Etienne

Normally you don't need to change anything to the score to be able to play it in 0.9.5. The soundfont in 0.9.5 includes a piano for every Midi program.
Just a note, you may know that next version 0.9.6 has a beta available and will be packaged with a full GM soundfont.

I know that, but the file that I created in 0.9.4 with a soundfont WILL NOT PLAY in 0.9.5 without a General Midi soundfont. It plays, but there is no sound. The default demo score plays fine, but the one I created does not.
Any ideas?

Here it is

What SoundFont are you using on Linux? Go to Edit > Preferences > I/O to find out.

The Fluid General Midi soundfont, FluidR3_GM.sf2
Hmmm, I thought I said that in the description...
Oh well, thanks for all the help so far!

Did to you by chance open and save "Father Song.mscz" using version 0.9.5 before you posted it on the forum? If so then maybe you can share the original file from 0.9.4. Also please check what revision number you are using for 0.9.4 is it 1518?

The version that I previously posted is indeed that was opened, slightly adjusted, and saved in 0.9.5. Here is the one created and edited only in 0.9.4.
And, my revision version of 0.9.4 is 1505 I think...

The file you attached has still been edited by version 0.9.5 and does not display correctly in version 0.9.4 (full measure rests display as quarter rests for example).
If I open it up in 0.9.5 it plays percussion sounds. To get it back to piano I went to the Change and adjust sounds , changed the instrument to something else, and changed it back to the first piano. After that it plays fine.

That can't be. Are you sure that it was edited in 0.9.5? The most recent file I attached was the one saved on my own computer, and I use 0.9.4, and it works fine there. I created it in 0.9.4 and saved it in 0.9.4.
However, the problem is that if I open it up on a Windows computer that has just had 0.9.5 loaded, then there is no sound at all. A clean install of 0.9.5 has just the "piano1" soundfont loaded. How can I get the sound to work in that? I have tried many times.

You can get the sound to work by following the steps I outlined in the comment above .
What is the origin of the file? Did you create it from scratch in MuseScore 0.9.4 or did you import the file from somewhere else to begin with?
When I download the file I can tell it was edited with 0.9.5 because if you change the ".mscz" file extension to ".zip" you can look inside to see the contents. It contains a "mscx" file. In version 0.9.4 and earlier use the ".msc" file extension instead. When I open the mscx file with a text editor it tells be that the file version is 1.11. This corresponds to MuseScore 0.9.5 as explained here: http://musescore.org/en/developers-handbook/version-information

Thanks I will try it as soon as I get the chance.
It's weird, though, that I saved the file in 0.9.4 and it works fine there.... one of the great mysteries probably. Or not so great mysteries.
Thanks for all the help so far!
In order to attempt to solve the entire problem, I (with much difficulty) managed to upgrade to 0.9.5 on my own computer. However, now the sound does not work at all. The sound settings are exactly the same as when I have 0.9.4, but I cannot play and music. The cursor does not even move - all that happens is that the play button goes in, but nothing happens.
Any ideas on how to get my sound working? I am on Ubuntu 9.10, not using Jack, and I have had my output set to both "hw:0" and "default" but neither works. Any settings that I am missing?
In reply to Upgrade doesn't work by etienne
Now that you are on version 0.9.5 you might try removing hw:0.

It works now, all by itself! It seems I just needed to restart my machine, and now it all works just fine
However, version 0.9.6 will solve all my problems. Is it fine to use for playback? I don't want to do major editing and writing (I'll use my 0.9.5 for that until 0.9.6 is officially out on stable) but for the people who will be receiving my music,. who then need to rehearse at home (singing) I would like to send them the link to download 0.9.6 with its built-in soundfont.
Is there such a link available? EDIT: Ok, I just saw the download link on the home page...
Solved by 0.9.6. Thanks to everyone who helped!
