Muse Sounds not working after Musescore 4.4 update

• Sep 1, 2024 - 18:42

After downloading the Musescore 4.4 update, none of the Muse Sounds that I have downloaded will appear in the sound font section of the mixer, and as such, will not play in the score. Muse Sounds are completely nonfunctional after downloading the update. I tried updating Muse Hub, which updated all the Muse Sounds as well as Musescore, leaving only my Audacity not up-to-date. This did nothing. I checked my Muse Hub file in Program Data on my PC and found that all the Muse Sounds files were still there. I relaunched Musescore 4 and found that the Muse Sounds still were not working. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have exactly the same problem (just downloaded 4.4 AppImage on Pop!_OS, a variant of Ubuntu).

Diagnostic > Muse Sampler > Check Muse Sampler says: "Muse Sampler library is not found".

Reverting to 4.3 makes the Muse Sounds reappear and play as before.

I've got the same problem. I made a post too, but nobody saw it. I hope there's a fix for it. In the meantime, does anyone know how to go back a version? ^^'

As far as I know, if the files were not saved in 4.4 (i.e. not changed) they should open up just fine. If the files were saved as 4.4 files, you may have to export them as MusicXML files and then import the MusicXML files into 4.3.2.

I don't know if 4.4 has an updated file format or not. I would think so with the new formatting options it has added.

It is too bad that MuseScore does have an option to save a file to an earlier file format (like many word processors have) - even if you might lose some of the new formatting options in the most recent MuseScore version.

I have the same issue in Fedora 39. I have no problem with version 4.3. I have the issue with both the current 4.4 version and the nightly build versions.

I have checked the paths, and both 4.3 and 4.4 seem to point to the same Muse Sounds locations.

The bug report guidelines suggest posting a problem to this forum first and seeing if someone can provide a fix. If no one can provide a fix, then post the problem to the MuseScore official bug report system after a week.

If no one can help us, I suggest we submit a bug report on Sept. 8th, or (if someone beats us to posting a bug report), add comments to a posted bug report giving our various operating systems and any additional information.

Please read above:
"Diagnostic > Muse Sampler > Check Muse Sampler says: "Muse Sampler library is not found"

So, "the MuseSounds option appears as greyed out"

In one word: you don't have access to these libraries (although they are installed in Muse Hub).

(This has just happened to me too on one of my computers)

I experienced this same issue on Windows 11. Check your logs; in my instance, the MuseSampler was being found but was too early of a version (0.4.0). Deleting the MuseSampler DLL from the C:/windows/system32 directory and relaunching musehub/musescore resolved the issue.

I have been able to fix this issue on two out of three computers. (All computers were running the Fedora 39 Linux operating system.) I will give an extended description below in case the details help anyone trying to diagnose the root problem.

However, the quick fix is to remove MuseSounds and reinstall it. I did not have to redownload the sound packs after the reinstallation. Apparently, they remain even if you remove MuseSounds from your computer. Once I reinstalled MuseSounds, everything ran fine. You may have to reboot your computer to get everything in sync.

Now for the details.

Computer 1: this computer never had MuseSounds installed on it. I updated to MuseScore 4.4 by installing the appimage, installed MuseSounds, and everything worked out of the box.

Computer 2: this computer had the current version of MuseSounds installed on it. I uninstalled MuseSounds, reinstalled it, and rebooted the computer. When I opened up MuseScore 4.4, it recognized MuseSounds and everything worked as expected.

Computer 3: this computer had both MuseSounds and MuseHub installed on it. As with the previous computer, I removed MuseSounds, reinstalled it, and rebooted. However, MuseScore 4.4 still does not recognize the existence of MuseSounds. I suspected the problem could come from the installation of MuseHub (since neither of the other computers had MuseHub installed) so I removed MuseHub and repeated the installation procedure. Unfortunately, MuseScore 4.4 still does not recognize the existence of MuseSounds.

I think MuseHub did not have a clean uninstall, so I will try to see if I can solve that problem and report back it I have any relevant changes.

Edit: I uninstalled MuseSounds, autoremoved any lingering dependencies, and cleaned the cache. After that, I reinstalled MuseSounds using the rpm command from the command line. This worked. However, the process did not work when I had tried installing MuseSounds with the dnf command.

All a bit of mystery to me, but hopefully useful to any developer who reads these comments.

I checked uninstalling MuseHub and MuseScore. It did not work. However, when reinstalling the Muse Sound libraries I set a custom location. I installed them on the SoundFonts folder. Then I opened MuseScore and verified the MuseSampler and it finally worked. I hope anyone who got this problem may seem this post to fix the issue.

This happened to me. The solution was, after the initial download, to launch MuseScore Studio from the Muse Hub where it says "launch". I think you have to do this just to complete the initial set up after downloading. After that, you can open MuseScore Studio as normal from your desktop and the Muse Sounds will appear in the mixer. Hope it works. 🎶👍

In my case, simply closing down MuseHub worked. I had recently re-installed MuseSounds, and this happened to me, so I tried shutting down MuseHub and it worked.
