Which version of MuseScore should I use as a beginner?

• Sep 26, 2024 - 05:53

Hello everyone. I just created an account today so I can finally try my hand at creating music. I'm following along with Jonathan Peter's course on music composition. I would like some insight on which version is best tailored towards beginners, or if I should just use the most recent version. Any help you can give me is appreciated. Thank you.

Just use the most recent version, of course.
There is no version for beginners. As with any software, there's a learning curve to be respected, but it's not very steep before you get rewarding first results fairly quickly.
Welcome aboard.

To be clear there is only one fully operational free version of MuseScore studio.
If you see things about "Pro" or whatever else looking like a paid option, this is ONLY for suscription to the sharing score web site and has nothing to do with MuseScore studio itself.
To create and write music you do NOT need that at all, it will NOT change your installation of MuseScore studio at all.

Sorry if you knew this already, but this is a frequent confusion so I just wanted to make sure it was clear.

To come back to your original question, it depends if you have friends having decided to stay with version 3 for now then use version 3, will be easier to share scores with them, if not then up to you to check the "missing features in V4" list and decide for yourself between 3 and 4.
Fwiw for me the lack of count in in V4 makes me keeping V3.
I'll reconsider the upgrade to V4 once that's solved.

• Best for audio: MS4
• Best for features and stability: MS3

As already mentioned, the Musescore software is completely free. (Uploading scores to musescore.com is also free). It's a point worth labouring as there is much confusion.
