How to stop saving in mscx format? I only want mscz
Is there a way I can tell Musescore to stop saving in the mscx file format? It's messing up the way I organize my files. There seems to be no way for me to predict the file format it will save as.

I believe the Save as option remembers the last used option, so just make sure to use the default .mscz option and it should remain like that. At least it works like that on my Windows setup.

Exactly. I never use just Save. Always Save As with a new version number. That way I always know what file is going where, why, and how. And I can go back to an earlier version if I need to.

However, this is only the case with Musescore 3. In 4.4 there is no option to save as mscx.

There is in Mu4 too, but different: is saves a whole folder structrure, "Uncompressed MuseScore folder", and is marked as being experimental.
Basically the same as if you'd unzip an mscz file
