Dips, Better Hairpins and Saxophone Altissimo

• Jul 10, 2017 - 03:34

I am a saxophonist that loves to use this program to make sheet music for myself, and in my time I've run into a few missing features that I'd like to point out:

1. Dips
The bend properties do not allow bends under the original pitch. Even if you put the starting pitch above the bottom line, the pitch is altered. I request that dips be added for the sax/any other instruments that don't have this feature.

2. Hairpins
Ritardando and accelerando would be useful, and the decrescendo/crescendo markings don't work at all.

3. High Saxophone Altissimo
There is at least a full octave above altissimo C, but any note above that in Musescore does not play.

Ad 2) Ritardando and accelerando have nothing to do with hairpins. Currenlty you can have them as System tesxt, without playback, or use the https://musescore.org/en/project/tempochanges plugin for getting them to play back. See also #9383: Rubato: ritardando and accelerando.
Crescendo and decrescendo lines do work, the same as hairpins do, they need a dynamic before and after to know how to change.

Ad 3) Probably the corresponding samples are missing in the soundfont, please open an issue about this https://musescore.org/en/node/add/project-issue/musescore and or a post in https://musescore.org/en/forum/776

It is a known limitation that hairpins do not playback on a single note, but they do over longer passages. We do hope to improve this in the future.

As for bends, not quite sure what you mean. Are you trying to use the guitar bends? Those might won't go lower, because the instrument doesn't support that. Use the regular bends from the Arpeggios & Glissandos palette, these can be shaped however you like. Do not they aren;t support for playback, but the primary purpose of MuseScore is notation, and these symbols do work for that purpose.

As for altissimo notes, is the default soundfont doesn't contain the notes you want, see the Handbook under "Soundfont" to learn how to install others that may contain more of the sounds you want.

Thank you, Jojo and Mark, for responding and guiding me to the plugins and soundfonts that I didn't know existed. :P

Regarding the bends, I meant something such as dips or changes in notes using microtones that you can do with your lip on wind and brass instruments or simply with your voice, and glissandos only bend using semitones; and even if it did use microtones, making a bend out of those would get messy. The bend articulation (the upward arrow with the word "full") does use microtones but there is no possible work-around to bend down which is not particularly helpful in my case. What I'm suggesting is a better interface for bending (in my context) these instruments/sounds.

Yes, and as I said, MuseScore *does* support the standard notations for these bends. The symbols are found on the Arpeggios & Glissandi palettes. Aside from the fact that playback doesn't happen to be supported, as far as I can tell these standard symbols *do* already support everything you are asking for. If all you are asking for is playback for support, then OK, I get that. But it sounds like you were wanting something different for the actual notation, and maybe weren't aware that there existing symbols already have the necessary flexibility.

Sorry for being ambiguous or vague, but what I'm trying to say is I want notations that bend notes like dips which do not sound like a glissando, doit, fall, or anything in the Arpeggios & Glissandi palette. I can create bends using the bend articulation but they look awful (in the pictures linked below) and true 'dips' or 'dives' etc. are impossible to create because the original pitch is on the bottom line (also shown in the picture below).

To give an example of how the existing symbols don't support my intended notation, listen to this ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukW1Wd-XwVY&t=5m30s ) and then these things under the Arpeggio/Gliss section ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNat4f_HbE8 ).

Sorry, I'm still not understanding. Can we agree to leave playback out of this That is, pretend your MuseScore had no playback capability, your sole purpose in using MuseScore is to produce printed sheet music for human musicians to perform (which is indeed the primary intended of MuseScore). Are you still having a problem, and if so, can you be specific about what the problem is?

Your picture shows me you are still trying to use the guitar bend symbols, which as I mentioned are not the correct symbols to sue. If you want to notate a doit, use the actual doit symbol. If you want to notate a fall, use the actual fall symbol. Same for scoops and plops. But all of these are customizable to achieve whatever look you are trying to achieve - just double click and drag the control points around to shape however you like.

If you continue to have trouble, please attach a picture of how you want the symbol to look and we will see if we can show you how to get that effect.

Again, if you are actually just requesting that these symbols support playback, that's another matter. Sure, that would be nice some day. But keep in mind the primary purpose of MuseScore remains notation, so development is prioritized accordingly.

Thanks for your help... I think the real problem here was my misunderstanding of Musescore's development priorities. But since that is to create notation, may I ask why the microtonal accidentals (sharps-and-a-half, etc.) are not in the nightly builds of 3.0?
