Adding more than one voice
In the score I am using, it begins with SATB with two parts per section. Further on in the piece just for a small bit, the alto part adds another two staves on, splitting the alto part into 4 parts and the same with the bass line. Is there a way of inputting this without it affecting the whole score?

Yes-ish :)
During inputting it will affect the whole score, as you'll have to add those as extra instruments.
But once you've done inputting all notes, you can turn on the "Hide Empty Staves" option (Style → General) to make those extra staves only pop up when required.
