I can't figure out how to delete notes. Going to the Cut menu item doesn't work.

So you have a range of notes/rests selected and then use the Edit/Cut menu and that does not empty that selection (and replaces it with rests)?

Is the icon under the new score icon a fancy N or does it look like an eye? I suspect you are in repitch mode. If it's an eye, click it and then click the N in the drop down menu. You should then be able to delete notes.
If you are not in note input mode, then selecting the notes (by clicking on them individually or selecting a whole range) then pressing Delete (or Cut) should definitely work. If you are seieng otherwise, please attach your score and give us precise steps to reprroblem, so we can understand better what might be going on.
