Musescore 2 can't read the files returned from the pdf conversion process. It may be that you convert them to Musescore 3, but for many of us it is impossible to install 3 because it has been released long before there are binaries for all platforms.
I have attached an example.

Not quite sure what you mean about not being released on all platforms? MuseScore 3 has been released on Windows (7 and up), MacOS (10.12 and up) and pretty much all linux platforms (using AppImage).

"Not quite sure what you mean" Chromebook Linux beta and Raspberry Pi. Appimage is problematic on those platforms.
I would like to suggest that files should be backward compatible at least while the latest distribution is not universally available. Or perhaps allow the option for musescore2.

Well there's a reason there are no official builds for those platforms; because they're not officially supported :)
Files are backwards compatible between minor releases; but that's simply not achievable between major releases. Otherwise the release probably wouldn't be "major".
The online PDF converter is a convenience frontend for the open source Audiveris project; If you want, you could try running your own version (it converts to musicxml), but I doubt it supports Chromebooks or Pi's as well...

Both raspberry pi and linux beta for chromebooks run linux debian. More specifically, chromebooks run stretch.
Musescore documentation https://musescore.org/en/node/281650 admits that 3 won't run on these platforms yet

You can still get and run Audiveris yourself and get MusicXML files from it.

I am very grateful for your help. It can be difficult to install software for which there is not a release candidate in the current distribution. In this thread we have established that there are modern linux distributions that are restricted to version 2 of Musescore. My point is that an associated program, Audiveris, which is available from the menu of Musescore 2, should produce a file that is actually compatible with Musescore 2.

Actually, the latest comment in that thread specifically does mention 3.x to be available on stretch via the linked PPA; although it comes without the plugin framework.
Furthermore I also read (even in the 1st comment) that the AppImage works just fine on stretch; so there you have your official release…
It would be good to have pdf conversion that will work on this musescore version.
I mostly agree there, but I can also see the point of only supporting the latest major release through the online hosted service. What I do think is that it should be at the very least made abundantly clear on the webpage that the resulting file will be in the MS3 format.

My reading of https://musescore.org/en/node/281650 is, as I quoted, that "users currently can install musescore 2.0.3 which is, of course, not satisfying, so stretch-backports ships the same musescore version that will be in buster, namely 2.3.2." The current version for stretch is therefore version 2.
Perhaps I am being deliberately obtuse here. As a computer professional I could fairly confidently go searching for an experimental ppa. I have, in the past installed the Appimage version but it did not work with the amount of time I had available. I have just now gone through the process of installing git, and gradle in order to get Audiveris to work, however I get "Starting a Gradle Daemon (subsequent builds will be faster)

I could, given time, get these things to work in all probability. But I am fairly sure that there are musicians who could not or would not be bothered. With my musician hat on, I can't be bothered. If there is something in the menu of Musescore 2 (an otherwise excellent program) then I would expect it to work. It doesn't.
