How to save the Beam User Position for a Note

• Apr 15, 2019 - 17:31

Hi all,
I am relatively new to MuseScore and have the following issue: When I write a score for a drumset, I like to have all stems pointing up, so also for Bass Drum and Pedal HiHat. However, when I enter an eight note (or any other note that results in a beam, this results in 2 levels of Beams. I know how to adjust the position of the Beam using Inspector, but I need to do this every time again, each time I use the specific note.

Is there a way, that I can save the Beam User Postion for a specific note?
As far as I can tell, it does not get saved when I save the style.

Many thanks in advance!

Correct, there is no way to do this currently Engraving rules for beams are extremely complex and also subjective, it's an area where it's almost impossible to provide meaningful controls over defaults.

Thanks Marc for your quick answer. I understand what you mean.
I guess wat would help, is when the software would not create 2 levels of beams for the same grouping.
See the screenshot in the attachment: The "beaming" of the first group of notes was created by default, I adjusted the second group of notes to only have one level of beams by changing the x and y position of the beam for the bass drum so it is at same level as the beam for the snare.
Or is that something which I can change in a general setting somewhere without having to do that for each note in the score?
Kind regards,
Joop

For a little explanation, you didn't mention if you are a drummer, but the reason the stems point in opposite directions is that the snare is played with the hands and the bass drum with the feet. The expectation of a drummer is that the bass drum will have stems pointed down to make this clear.

What you can do if this doesn't matter to you is edit the drumset. You can make the bass drum have the same voice and stem direction as the snare. You will then need to figure out the "notes" you would need to enter to notate both drums at the same time. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/drum-notation for drumsets. The input is a little different than on pitched instruments.

Thanks Mike for the explanation regarding “stems up or down” and the link.
FYI: I was taught reading drum scores “all stems up” so for me the staff line where the note is tells me if I use my hands or my feet. I won’t play the snare with my feet or the bass drum with my hands ;-) Being used to that, it also means a “clearer/simpler” notation, but I guess that is a matter of taste.
Having said all of this, I have only been playing and reading scores for about 3 years now, things may change as I go along.
In any case your help and feedback is much appreciated!

Right, to be clear: you should be entering notes in different voices and then changing their stems to point the same way. If you prefer the style of notations where all stems are up, you need to enter all the notes into the same voice. Easiest way to do so is to edit the drumset definition as mike320 mentioned above. Then you can enter the simultaneous notes as "chords" on the same beat rather than notes in different voices as is the default.
