Is it possible to "capo" a tablature?

• May 22, 2019 - 21:57

To help practicing sight reading on guitar, it would be very useful to enter a piece of music in the regular staff (5 line pentagram) , then create the tablature for it. Since the guitar allow to play the same passage in different positionss. is there a way to select / force the tablature to start at a given fret? That would allow to practice a given piece in several regions, lets say from fret 0 to 5, then from fret 5 to 10, etc.

I can see that some notes in the original piece might be below the area defined by a "capoed" tablature, but these notes could be placed (in the tablature) below the capo, perhaps with another color or texture, so that the user could alter the melody to fit at or above the starting fret number (capo) selected.

Shoichi, thanks for your reply. I had read the posting you are referring to, but that is not exaclty what I had in mind. Maybe I did not explain correctly, so I am attaching a simple example.

Suppose I enter the notes a, d, g and b in the regular 4-line staff, as in measure 1. Either before or after (adding a linked tablature staff) the tablature shows them in strings 5, 4, 3 and 2 all open notes. That's OK.

I created measure 2 by hand, by moving the notes in the tablature to different strings.

What I would like is how to convert automatically measure 1 into measure 2, where the same notes in the general staff are now moved to a different position in the guitar tablature, but not really "transposed". That's why I referred to "capoed" in the original post, since it has moved to a different position in the guitar, but not really transposed .

Is there any way to get something like measure 2 directly from the notes in the general staff?

thanks for your prompt attention. You guys are doing a spectacular job !

For longer passages (and not completely 'automatic') you can Ctrl + ↓ and then 'fix' any 'wrong' notes.
So.... starting from something like this:

to get something like this:

Perform the steps shown here:

Here's the file you can use to experiment:

Well...
Not directly from the general staff, but you can select measure(s) in the TAB and press Ctrl+↓ (down arrow).
